The Power of Death In the short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, a message of how death can make a person go insane is told. The story starts off with an image of a funeral and how it affected the town. Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation among the town. When her father died, she told the town that he in fact had not died. She let this go on for three days, stinking up the town with the decaying smell, until she finally let them take his body for burial. After her father passed away, Colonel Sartoris remitted her taxes because her father had loaned money to the town. Generations after generations had passed through the mayors and some tried to change this situation because they thought it was unfair, but they all failed. Miss Emily

She feels like she should be on the top of the whole town because she is the last Grierson alive. As stated in the text by the town people, the Griersons held themselves a little too high for what they really were (4). Even if Miss Emily actually came out of her house to try to meet a man, her father would not allow her to date because none of them were quite good enough for her. After a few years of teaching China painting and being seen with Homer, she isolated herself in her home. No one was allowed in and no one saw Emily ever again, until the day they found her dead in her home. The only person who had contact with her was the man who carried groceries into her home every once in awhile. Being left alone, and a pauper (a very poor person), she had become humanized (4). She did not mind being left alone for the rest of her life. She actually enjoyed only having herself and sometimes Homer to talk to and isolating herself. After a loved one or a close friend passes away, people sometimes isolate themselves and as you can see, after her father died and Homer deserted her, Emily was one of those
