CAUSES OF POWER CRISIS IN BANGLADESH AND MEASURES TO ERADICATE THE PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION
1. Electricity is the air and water of modern civilization. With the invention of electricity human life, culture and society has dramatically changed. Present day society demands electricity as the basic need in every moment of human life. It plays a decisive role in agricultural mechanization, industrialization, urbanization etc. Without electricity, communities are unable to participate in the benefits of modern advances and are left isolated and literally in the dark. The per capita energy consumption of a country reflects the level of progress and economic status. The present per capita electricity consumption for our country is about 6% of the world average. Having a consumption rate of 150.97 k ilowatt hours, Bangladesh is one of the least developed countries of the world. Almost 49% people have access to electricity. This is indeed a much low rate.
2. A balanced power system has three factors. Those are generation, transmission and distribution. To ensure a stable situation in a country, these three factors must go equally side by side. The generation must meet continuously increasing demand with quality supply and reliability. Presently, Bangladesh produces up to 4,500 megawatts of electricity a day which is almost 1,500 megawatts short of demand. Again, distribution of power between East and West Zone is uneven. There is always a flow of power from East to West causing huge transmission losses. This displays the poor condition of all three factors. Broadly the causes of this power crisis can be- lack of an efficient power system master plan, slowness in execution, lack of harmony in the progress of three factors of the system, system loss, corruption, poor administration, lack of effective motivation and supervision, consumer’s behaviour etc.

3. Each and every year we are losing at least a handsome amount of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) due to the shortage of

The invention of electricity, to many, can be considered one of the greatest inventions by humanity, behind writing and the wheel. From its first discovery in the 1600s till present day, electricity has fascinated the minds of scientist everywhere. Over time society has been established with a very high dependency on this commodity. Imagine our world today without electricity or any of the inventions derived from it. Modern societies would have taken a much different path. Last year the International Energy Agency conducted a survey on the energy statistics for over 30 of the more developed countries. Around 62 percent of the energy produced worldwide was created from combustible fuel source (Monthly Electricity Statistics). When combustible fuel is burned, carbon and other harmful byproducts are released into the atmosphere. This brings about environmental injustice since every living organism in contact with the atmosphere now suffers the consequences which the few benefit from. While I believe this is the more grave concern regarding electricity, the majority of the modernized world might not have an equivalent conclusion.…

Electricity is a prerequisite for any economic activity. Absence of electricity extensively hampers the overall productivity of an economy- households, businesses, enterprises, industries, communications, industries, education, service sector et cetera. Due to acute power crunch, cost of production of industries is going up, cost competitiveness of Nepalese products is decreasing, industries are closing down, production is being winded down, a shortfall in domestic production is leading to an increase in imports of even the most basic goods and services (contributing to widening trade deficit), and future growth potential is being severely crippled. Nepal’s electricity generation has been dominated by hydropower. Despite Nepal’s huge hydropower potential, approximately 40,000 MW of economically feasible hydropower potential, it has not been able to utilize even 1/40th of it. The…

The need for power is a reality of life; to use or abuse, to claim or deny, own or disown. However the struggle many go through to gain that feeling of control and power can lead to inner turmoil and conflict between others and one self. Set in the times of the tragic witch trials The Crucible is a drama that shows power resting on moral, legal and religious dynamics that lead to inner, social and religious conflicts. Marking Time an ABC miniseries explores the inner conflict of Hal as he struggles to maintain his power by being with a group he does not really fit into, it also shows how the youth of society challenge authority which leads to social conflict between the two groups. Lord of the Flies a novel by William Golding about the savageness in all innocence and explores the concept of fighting for power to gain status and attitude. Power can be gained, won and fought for but the struggle for it can cause inner, social and religious conflict is explored in all three texts some the concept more clearer than others.…

According to (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=electricity-gap-developing-countries-energy-wood-charcoal) 130 years ago Thomas Edison had created an artificial light to be used for the humanities sake, but there is still one quarter of the world’s population or 1.5 Billion people (mostly on Africa and South Asia) that lacks on electricity despite of other nations that is continuing to grow in terms of technology and electricity like USA and China. Because this nations that lack on electricity still don’t have access on modern fuels like natural gas, kerosene and etc. Instead they are using charcoal and woods that causes pollution and health problems. Researchers are recommending these Nations to switch to more efficient energy for their own health. Some of the people think that this 1.5 billion people without electricity is a good thing because this will lessen the possibility releasing heat trapping gases that will soon cause Global Warming.…
