Poverty In America Essay
Poverty is a big problem in the Americas. In 2010, 15.1% of all citizens were below the poverty line- and people aren’t magically getting wealthier. A question has been rising: Are people able to change their social and financial status? Is it fixed, or changeable, or somewhere in between? It all depends on how willing a person is to try to get out of poverty. If one sits around and does nothing but cry about how poor they are, they will not be as successful as someone who keeps their head up looking for opportunities. In conclusion, some people can move up in status, while some can’t. There have been several instances of people going from being povertized, or even homeless, to successful and wealthy men and women. For instance, J.K. Rowling, famed author of the Harry Potter series, was once very poor. She was a single mother and was living off of government handouts. She fought through it, turned her suffering into magic, and wrote her books! She was once considered a billionaire, though she ended up giving away $160 million to charity. Another example is Oprah Winfrey. She was born into a lower class family, and had a fairly bad home life. Now she’s very wealthy and very generous. One may be judged and beaten down for how they look and how much money they have, but if they keep fighting, they can improve their life. If they give up- like Dally did, eventually- it will never get better. It can be very difficult to improve, and that’s largely where the problem in the America’s come from.
