Potato Osmosis Lab Report
Title: Potato Osmosis

Abstract: In this experiment was designed to study the effect of a concentrated solution applied to white and sweet potatoes. The solution’s impact among the potatoes were to be either hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic. The potatoes were first cut into fries with a fry cutter, and then weighed after being cut. The white and sweet potatoes’ weights ranged from .005-.015 grams. A total of 18 sugar solutions are to be made over the course of 3 trials. In each trial, 6 different types of solutions are to be made. (0% sugar, 10% sugar, 20% sugar, 30% sugar, 40% sugar, and 50% sugar). For each trial, in 6 plastic cups, pour 100mL of water, combine the sugar that in which corresponds to the percentage of sugar, and place one “potato fry” in each cup. In the first and second trials, use the sweet potatoes. In the third trial, use the white potatoes.
LABELTHE CUPS ACCORDING TO THE MIXED SOLUTION! Leave the potatoes to sit for a 24-hour period.

Introduction: Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a partially permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration in the presence of water. An isotonic solution is one in which the concentration of solutes is the same inside the cell as outside the cell (STAYS THE SAME). A hypotonic solution will have a lower concentration of solutes than the cell (SWELLS). A hypertonic solution will have a higher concentration of solutes than the cell and will have a higher osmotic pressure outside the cell than inside the cell. (SHRINKS) The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of one concentrated solution (with different percentages of solute) on white and sweet potatoes. If a .015 white potato is placed in solution with 50% sugar, then it will shrink! (Hypotonic) Materials:
• Sugar
• Water
• Potato Fry Cutter
• Plastic Cups
• Black Permanent Marker
• Graduated Cylinder
• 1 Sweet Potato
• 1 White Potato

Osmosis is when a fluid passes threw a semi permeable membrane. Moving from an area in which a solute such as salt is present in low concentrations to an area in which the solute is present in high concentrations. There are three types of osmosis: hypertonic is when there is high concentration and the cell has no water inside it (shrunk), hypotonic is when there is low concentration and the cell has swelled up or in other words has a lot of water inside it, isotonic is when the water comes in and out of the cell and stays the same shape. All the carrots we put in the salt solution was from the same carrot, the 0% carrots mass was 6.8grams, the 5% salt solution is 14.6 grams, the 10% salt solution is 6.3grams and the 15% salt solution is 6.8 grams. My hypothesis was that the carrot would shrink and be very small and gooey, but it was wrong.…

My hypothesis in this experiment was that a Yukon gold potato will naturally absorb more water than a sweet potato due to the effects of osmosis. Osmosis plays a huge role in biology for a multitude of reasons. As defined by Freeman (2012) “The movement of water is a special case of diffusion that is given its own name: osmosis, occurs only when solutions are separated by a membrane that is permeable to some molecules but not others- that is, a selectively permeable membrane.”(P.90). It is also a type of passive transport, as it does not require energy.…

The purpose of this lab was to observe the rate of osmosis and diffusion, as well as the effect of molecular size of the particles on this rate. Part I of the lab was a demonstration of osmosis and diffusion, that dealt with raisins in different liquid environments, each with a different concentration of sugar. Part IV of the lab was using the same idea as the demonstration, by putting objects in different concentrations of a substance; in this case elodea leaves in salt water. In both cases, the objects in a greater concentration of the substance were stripped of their water. However, where there was a little or no concentration of sugar or salt, the objects did not lose their water, and in the case of the raisin, became saturated with excess…

Also in the lab on September 16, 2013 we discussed the effect of Osmosis on potatoes. Osmosis is a process in which the molecules of a solvent diffuse from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration, through a semipermeable membrane. We put the potatoes in different solutions with a different amount of sucrose in each solution, starting from 0.0 to 0.6. My hypothesis was that in from the 0.0 to 0.3 the weight of the potatoes will shrink and from 0.4 to 0.6 the potatoes will grow. If the potatoes absorb the sucrose and gain weight then they are hypotonic. But if the potatoes shrink then they are hypertonic. If they don’t change in size at all they are isotonic.…

It is evident form my graph that as sugar concentration increases the mass of the potatoes when reweighed decreases. This is shown where sugar concentration 0.5M has the lowest value on the graph, therefore highest percentage decrease. When the potato chips are put into distilled water the mass increases, this is shown by the highest value on the graph given by the distilled water solution. In distilled water the potato chips swell up because water enters their cells by osmosis. The distilled water has a high water concentration whereas the potato chips have a low water concentration because there are lots of other solute molecules like sugar due to starch content. This means to eliminate the concentration gradient the distilled water must pass through the semi-permeable membrane into the potato chip. Due to the uptake of water into the potato chips there is an increase in the mass of the potato chips, this can be seen This is what happened when we reweighed the potatoes. This is clearly shown on my graph as the potatoes placed in distilled water gave the highest positive percentage change in mass. When the potatoes are placed in rich sugar solution the potatoes will decrease in mass because water leaves their cells due to osmosis. This is because also happens in sugar solution 0.4M, 0.3M and 0.2M but to a less extent. In the 0.1M solution the potato chip increases in mass. The reason for this is that the concentration of sugar is high and the water in the potato has a low concentration. This means that the sugar solution passes into the potato cells making the potato increases in weight. The conclusion that I have come to is in support of my…

    8. The cells in the solutions of distilled water, 0.4% NaCl, and 0.9% NaCl would all appear to be inflated and could burst. This is due to the fact that the solution is hypotonic to the potato, thus water is entering the cell. Meanwhile, the cells in the solutions 5% NaCl and 10% NaCl would have shriveled cells. This is because the solution is hypertonic and water is leaving the potato out into the solution.…

Osmosis is the movement of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a semi permeable membrane. An osmotic system is established when a semi-permeable membrane is placed between two solutions. In this biological systems context, osmosis is the exchange of water between the potato cell and the surrounding medium of varying sucrose concentrated solutions, with the plasma membrane being the semi- permeable membrane. Because water molecules have kinetic energy, they are constantly moving around in gaseous or liquid form, moving randomly from one place or another. The greater the concentration of water molecules in a system or solution, the greater the total kinetic energy, and the higher its water potential. This means, that as the concentration of glucose increases in a solution, the concentration of water decreases, lessening the solution's water potential, and lessening its ability to move between solutions by osmosis. Relating this to the potato chips: basically, as the concentration of glucose in each solution increases, the water in that solution is less able to move to the potato as there is a higher concentration of water in the potato chip than in the highly concentrated sucrose solution, causing water from the potato to move to the solution, thereby achieving a percentage loss in mass. At concentrations such as 0.0molL-1 and 0.9molL-1, the concentration gradient is steeper; therefore the rate of diffusion is quicker. For the potato chips in the hypertonic 0.9 sucrose solution, the concentration of water molecules in the potato chip cells is greater than the water molecules in the 0.9 sucrose solution. This means that through the process of osmosis, water molecules will move from the potato cell through its semi permeable membrane and into the sucrose solution, therefore resulting in a percentage loss in mass of the potato chips as depicted by my results (a loss of XXX%), thereby justifying why the potato chips in the 0.9…

If excess water were left on the potato, the weights would not be accurate. (15) Repeat this with the 14 potato tubes left. Once all the potatoes are out of the solution, the potato tubes need to be measured on the same weighing scales used before (2 decimal places).…

Tonicity refers to the concentration of solutes in a solution (Lab 6-7). There are three stages of tonicity: Isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic. Four unknown solutions were given and labeled as followed: Solution A, Solution B, Solution C, and Solution D. Since potato cells were used for this type of experiment, in an Isotonic solution the solute and water concentration are the same as inside the cell in which the isotonic solution contains 0.9% NaCl. In other words, water moves in and out in the same amount without causing any changes. In a hypertonic environment, the solute concentration is greater and water concentration is less outside the potato cell in which the hypertonic solution contains 10.0% NaCl. This solution will cause the potato cells to loose water and shrink and if too much water is loss the cell may die as well. In a hypotonic environment, the solute concentration is lower and there is a higher water concentration outside of the cell. The flow of the water occurs inwards into cells provoking the cells to burst. The term used to describe the bursting of the cells is called (lyse) and then the cells die. The hypotonic solute contains 0.2% NaCl.…
