Abstract
From the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, the demand for energy has increased exponentially. As a result, the majority of this energy requirement is sufficed by the combustion of inexpensive fossil fuels. The burning of these fuels has led to further global warming, forcing society to seek other forms of clean, high-density energy. While renewable resources such as hydroelectric, solar, and wind energy are worthy substitutes, they are not yet ready to meet the world's energy needs. Nuclear power is an attractive energy source, as it doesn't emit greenhouse gases and can be used on a large scale, producing over 20% of electricity in the United States.1 Although with any energy solution, comes consequences.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a 15-meter tsunami in Japan.7 The reactors at Fukushima Daiichi proved tolerant to earthquakes, but the tsunami disabled the power supply and cooling function of three reactors, causing them to melt in three days.7 Without emergency generators, the situation led to hydrogen explosions and the forced evacuation of people within twenty miles of the accident. After the disaster, Fukushima was tasked with cooling and preventing the release of radioactive materials through contaminated water and air.7 The Japanese nuclear safety commission estimated that the plant's reactors "released up to 10,000 terabecquerels of radioactive iodine-131 per hour into the air for several hours after they were damaged."4 Unlike Chernobyl, no immediate deaths or radiation sicknesses have been reported from the accident, but the government is still hesitant to allow evacuees to return to the contaminated …show more content…
Radioactive wastes require various types of management dependent upon the amount and type of uranium radioisotopes in them, which are classified as low-level, intermediate-level, and high-level wastes. In turn, the various radioisotopes found in nuclear waste each have a specific half-life, or the time it takes for a radioisotope to lose half of its radioactivity.9

Low-level radioactive waste, which "is not dangerous to handle, but must be disposed of more carefully than normal garbage"9, is sent to land-based disposal after disposed of.     On March 11, 2011, a tragedy struck Japan that will never be forgotten. Ocean ridges and mountain ranges below the surface of the ocean caused the waves created by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan. These two factors together caused a deathly Tsunami that Japan is still struggling to recover from. The earthquake and tsunami together killed 15,840 people and set off a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Six million households, more than 10% of the total in Japan, were without electricity. In Tokyo, rail service was suspended overnight, elevated highways were shut down and streets remained jammed as commuters who spent the night in shelters fought to get to their homes. To make matters worse, the terrifying natural disaster had sparked a human-caused crisis, as radiation leaks from crippled reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Three of the plant 's six reactors overheated and their fuel melted down causing hydrogen explosions to blow the tops off three reactor buildings, which lead to a major leak of radiation at levels not seen since Chernobyl in 1986. The authorities hugely underestimated the risks tsunamis posted to the plant. Tokyo Electric had assumed that no wave would reach more than about 20 feet, but little did they know the tsunami would hit more than twice that height. Also, the workers left at Fukushima Daiichi had not been trained to handle multiple failures, causing them to panic. A communication breakdown meant that workers at the plant had no clear sense of what was happening (Tabuchi web). Japan had been scanning for radiation exposure by medical teams because of the risk when radioactive iodine enters the body and settle in the thyroid. Children are especially vulnerable.     In one of his lectures “Nuclear Waste” Richard A. Muller, discussing the nuclear waste problem, scientists’ attempts to find the solution, and the public’s fear around it, gives the audience his personal evaluation. He makes a point that since the nuclear waste is here, we have to store it and storing at Yucca Mountain is not the worst option, because the dangers of storing it there is smaller than the dangers of not doing so. This lecture makes me recall the tragic event in my country when one of the nuclear reactors exploded at Chernobyl nuclear plant in 1986. The consequences of this accident were and still are terrible for people and the environment in Ukraine and in surrounding countries. Furthermore, recent consequences of earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan at Fukushima nuclear plant increase the importance of the scientific debate against nuclear power, and force people around the world to come out against the nuclear power. People using nuclear power cannot control the whole process of its generation, as well as they do not know what to do with nuclear waste. Since we have nuclear waste, we are facing the necessity of disposing it. Muller notes that storing nuclear waste will not seem such unacceptable if we evaluate the danger of waste storage in comparison with two other dangers: the danger of the uranium originally mined, and the danger of the natural uranium left in the soil. The point is that we cannot guarantee the absolute security, but even the nature cannot; and the possible waste leakage is not a kind of danger that cannot be minimized.…
