One principal path in which the two organizations decided to utilize technology was supply chain management, as HEB decided to fundamentally create economies of scale utilizing ECR (Efficient Consumer Response) while Land's End decided to seek a partnership with ASI (Archetype Solution, Inc) with a specific end goal to add to its mass customization framework. Both strategies prompted upgrades in organization proficiency and synergistic vertical associations with suppliers and producers. Before the end of HEB's patching up of their POS framework and full usage of the CRP framework, both Land's End and HEB had a comparable framework of taking out the requirement for manual purchasing and contact with makers. HEB was able to use their CRP and POS scanning system to allow manufacturers to access their inventory levels and supply them based on forecast demand and other constraining factors (McFarlan, 1997). Land's End has a comparable thought in which e-commerce based requests for altered merchandise would go specifically to the producer, ASI, and would consider a lessening in stock administration inside of the firm. Tesco identifies vacancy in different ways firstly, if someone quits their job they would immediately know that person has left and needs to be replaced. If there is more demand online they would know that they need fewer checkouts and need more personal shoppers. If Tesco have an expansion they would know there is more vacancies because more shifts need to be covered. There a quite a few jobs which people do at Tesco. the lower level jobs are going to have a more simple description whereas the higher levers are going to be more complex and it is likely that they will change over time but the lower levels probably won't. tesco goes with this by rating the jobs in levels, level 1 are the frontline jobs working directly with customers. Various in-store tasks, such as filling shelves with stock. Requires the ability to work accurately and with enthusiasm and to interact well with others. Then it goes up to a higher level. Work level 2 is leading a team of employees who deal directly with customers. Requires the ability to manage resources, to set targets, to manage and motivate others. Work level 3 is running an operating unit. Requires management skills, including planning, target setting and reporting. Work level 4 are the people who are supporting operating units and recommending strategic change. Requires good knowledge of the business, the skills to analyse information and to make decisions, and the ability to lead others. For work level 5 people are responsible for the performance of Tesco as a whole. Requires the ability to lead and direct others, and to make major decisions. The highest level is 6 which are for people who are creating the purpose, values and goals for Tesco plc. Responsibility for Tesco’s performance. Requires a good overview of retailing, and the ability to build a vision for the future and lead the whole organisation. The job description is useful for the candidates because it says what they will have to do in their job. It also helps…

The challenge facing Xerox and its management is complex, challenging and probably not unique. The company had been dependent on its highly trained sales force to turn a profit on their existing products and had not focused on new product opportunities until the development of its "Book In Time" product. This revolutionary product presented some new opportunities for the company. One of the significant advantages this product yielded was its costs. The Book-in-Time equipment allows for a publishing company to produce a 300-page book for $7, something which could have been previously reached only for lots larger than 1,000 copies. A significant decrease in publishing costs, given the fact that these cover up to 20 % (including the paper and binding the book), would create the possibility of an increased profit margin.…

As the focus on human capital and information technology intensifies within firms, an understanding of how to harness these two trends is increasingly important. This study examines how competitive advantage and higher firm performance depend on the presence of five moderating factors, not dollars spent on information technology. These moderating factors, identified in previous research, are: 1) Information Procurement and Dissemination, 2) Absorptive Capacity, 3) Cross-Functional Communication, 4) Culture and 5) Organization Assessment and Information Technology Strategy Review. Using a two-firm case study methodology, I analyze the presence or absence of these moderating factors in knowledge initiatives at Sun Microsystems and Lockheed Martin Corporation. The empirical evidence gathered from these cases supports the argument that the presence of moderating factors is critical for successful knowledge management implementation.…
