portrait of the artist as a filipino
In the story, it was about the lives of the Marasigan sisters, Paula and Candida and their father, Don Lorenzo Marasigan, a famous painter. In the scene, there was Bitoy Camacho who was an old friend came to visit the Marasigan family. He wasexamining the sala, the painting caught the attention of Bitoy, a young man carrying an old man in his back in the burning city and the portrait is called A Portrait of the Artist as a Filipino. The portrait was about Don Lorenzo which he painted himself as Aeneas and the burning city is the Troy. The sisters have explained too that the young and old man was their father from what he is now and what he used to be in the past.
In the scene where Bitoy and Don Lorenzo were having their conversation and the sisters were having merienda, Tony Javier, their lodger came and was invited a merienda. Candida talked to Tony that he have broken their rules for bringing up a woman the night when he went home from his work and happened that they are still awake. But Tony kept on denying and lying to the sisters that he did not bring up a woman but instead it was their drummer who came with him to get his music from his room. Poorly, the sisters were fooled and instead believe in what he said and apologize for they have falsely accused him. A woman instinct never fails but since they were not sure and able to see them because it’s too dark downstairs, they are the losers at that moment.

At first glance, this essay might be guessed to just be an informational essay about the art of a few Asian American artists but it delves much deeper than that. Further research has led me to the discovery that it took some guts for these artists to step out of the comfort zone and confront the stereotypes pressed upon them by society that prevents them to be what they want to be. It has led me to an understanding that this issue poses more of a problem than previously thought. Why can’t Asian Americans see themselves as artists, rather than follow the unfortunate American stereotype that Asian-Americans have to all be doctors or lawyers or banker, scientist, or businessman? Art is significant, it allows individuals to express themselves; bringing the inner reality into the outer world of physical reality; Integrating the mind, body, and soul. But Asian Americans feel threatened, fearsome of being ciritizied, stereotypes so sometimes they constrict their innovative personalities into a tight bottle.…
