Polishing of Asphalt
Abstract

Polishing of asphalt pavements is an obstacle faced regularly on the roads of Lebanon. This behavior of the pavement causes its skid resistance to be reduced, knowing that the lower the skid resistance value, the higher the percentage of the traffic accidents especially during the winter season.

The following report presents a project carried out in the Highway materials and Construction course taken at AUB for a better understanding of the effect polishing and wet conditions have on skid resistance.

A concise literature review on skid-resistance, polishing causes and polishing experimentation is conducted followed by a detection of the main experimental concerns.

Following the literature review, laboratory experiments of which results are clearly presented are carried out in the Civil Engineering department soils and materials labs at AUB.

Finally, an analysis of the results and possible improvement methods and precautions to avoid polishing of asphalt pavements are proposed.

Introduction

During the entire life cycle of a pavement, highway agencies are expected to monitor and maintain an adequate surface roughness to facilitate friction between car tires and pavement surface.

Polishing is a smooth slippery surface caused by repeated wear on the pavement due to traffic and even heavy pedestrian load on parking lot pavements. This behavior of the pavement will cause its skid resistance to be reduced. For high-speed pavements this can be a serious surface distress, while on most parking facilities, the distress is negligible.

Our transportation problems in Lebanon are not only caused by the huge demand for transportation services but also by the distresses or damages the pavements experience without any appropriate maintenance.

A better understanding of asphalt pavements polishing behavior helps in a better perceptive on how to avoid this problem or solve it.

Traffic snarls increase fuel consumption and emissions when drivers are brought to a halt or forced to creep along. Since asphalt pavement is faster to install and repair than concrete pavement, less time is needed to build a new road to alleviate congestion and lanes closed for repairs can be reopened quickly. In addition, because asphalt pavement is remarkably smooth, fuel consumption can be as much as 4.5 percent less for vehicles driving on asphalt as opposed to a rougher pavement.…

If you are looking for ways to maximize the return on your investment in asphalt pavement, sealcoating should be at the top of your list. Assuming that you do not allow overweight traffic on your pavement and that you have cracks filled promptly, your asphalt pavement could last up to twice as long if you simply have fresh sealcoating applied periodically. The intervals between sealcoating will depend on the use that your pavement receives and its overall condition, but every two to three years is typically about right for most properties. However, you should keep in mind that there are certain times of the year during which sealcoating cannot be applied.…

Williams (2003) explored the relationships between HMA mixture properties and rutting susceptibility as measured by wheel-tracking devices. He concluded that many factors, such as voids in mineral aggregate (VMA) , asphalt binder PG grade, and binder content, played a role in the rutting characteristics of HMA samples. Although regression analyses were unable to establish valid mathematical relationships, several trends were observed as summarized below. Thiessen et al. (2000) investigated the correlations between material properties and strength parameters measured in the laboratory with the observed rutting behaviour in the field. It was found that physical mixture properties cannot by themselves explain the observed rutting performance of the pavements tested. Regression analyses of both as-constructed and recovered core properties show poor correlations to the rate of rutting. Zhu et al. (2001) investigated the feasibility of replacing wheel-tracking test by a repeated-load creep test for evaluating HMA rutting potential. Based on the findings of the test results, favourable conclusions concerning the use of the repeated-load creep test for rutting potential were drawn. Zhu concluded that the correlation between the two types of tests was good for all three asphalt mixtures investigated. Thiessen et al. (2000) investigated the rutting performance of asphalt pavements in Manitoba, Canada. Samples taken from the field were tested using modified indirect tensile tests. Analysis of test results clearly showed that the measured deformation and Poisson’s ratio obtained from the indirect tensile test were closely related to field rutting behaviour. Christensen et al. (2002) evaluated the use of indirect tensile test and unconfined compressive test to assess rutting potential. Their research showed that both indirect tensile strength and unconfined compressive strength were good predictors of the rut…

The fatigue life in terms of number of cycles obtained for mixes with and without RAP is shown in Figure 14. Based on data analysis, increased trend in fatigue values is observed in 50% RAP and 60% RAP mixtures at all microstrains. Fatigue life in all these mixtures is statistically significant due to the variability in test results as exhibited by error bars. The RAP mixes become stiffer compared to the mix without RAP and thus have better resistance to fatigue failure. A slight increase in stiffness can result in an exponential increase in fatigue life of the recycled mixture (Viet Hung Nguyen. 2009). Therefore, the increased fatigue life implies that the mix prepared with addition of RAP is more durable than the mix without RAP. As observed, resistance to fatigue failure is less in foamed mixes; this could be due to less bitumen content of lower viscosity. The increase in fatigue life of the mixes containing 50% RAP was found to be 9 and 7 times more when compared to the mix without RAP at 400 and 500 respectively. Also these cold recycled mixtures showed least resistance to fatigue failure at 500 microstrain indicating that these mixtures should be laid in lower layers of pavement. The test results of beam fatigue are given in Table…

India has one of the largest highway and road networks on the planet, third road network after United States and China. The road network has expanded from 0.4 million km in 1951 to about 3.32 million kilometres presently (2012), a sevenfold increase, but traffic has increased 120 times. This leads to the deterioration of the surface of the asphalt pavements and a need to rehabilitate them before further damage could occur. Since the use of a concrete overlay, called as whitetopping, is a relatively new concept in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement rehabilitation in India.…

The researcher chooses banana peelings and aloe Vera as components of the polish. But first, the researcher must find out if the product was an effective as commercial polish and if it can be used for different surfaces so the researcher conducted an experiment. The researcher scraped the inner portion of banana peelings and boiled for four hours, extracted the Aloe Vera gel and blended to obtain a smooth gel.
