Police Corruption and the perception of the public
The duty of police was essentially supposed to be to prevent crime, enforce laws, and maintain order, and provide emergency assistance, but there have been and continue to be cases of police officers who do the exact opposite of that. Because of the officers who do or have behaved in a corrupt manner now the public perceives all officers as corrupt and abusing their power, causing the public to resist authority and to not cooperate with officials. Police misconduct is something that has been around since the beginning of policing, but now necessary action has been taken to tackle, punish, and hopefully reduce if not eliminate the misconduct in the police force. Police corruption can result in the damage to police legitimacy, occupational integrity, and the public image of police as well. It is important for the public to have a positive perception of police because their perception shapes the way they respond to police, their support and cooperation, and willingness to participate in anti-crime programs. Once the public has a more positive opinion of police, there would be more cooperation from the public and more effective policing by officials.
Police corruption is the abuse of public power by police officers for their own profits. “Police have extraordinary powers that are not given to others, including the power to briefly take away the liberty of other citizens” (Miller, 2010, p. 243). Since police have this power, some are very tempted to misuse it for their own benefits. Just like there are different kind of crimes that people can commit, there are also different ways that officials can behave that can be found corrupt. The different kinds of cases include accepting money and gratuities, using unnecessary violence or brutality, participating in

    According to Holloway (2002) corruption can be of two types: internal and external. Internal corruption is a corrupt agreement that can take place among a group of police officers and may involve major changes or decisions of administrative policies that are inappropriate and illegal. Internal politics and unjustified removal of officials, or carrying out behavior within prison situations that may not be completely legal or even releasing prisoners by accepting a bribe given to a group of police officials are all part of internal corruption which accounts for a failure of an entire police system and can involve several policemen or police of one state or region.     Police corruption has been around since there has been police. Two of the key elements of police corruption is misuse of authority and personal gain (Walker & Katz, 2011, p. 425). There are many types of corruption in a police department. First, gratuities in which are the most common form, whether you are taking free food from the gas station or a discount or your dry cleaning this can be considered as a form corruption. Some police departments prohibit gratuity and some do not. You have isolated acts that happen while a police officer is performing their duties, such as when a police officer takes money to protect a drug headquarters, which is called a bribe.     Being a police officer is an honorable career. For the majority of the public, a police officer is one of the more respected members of the community because everyone looks up to them to protect their community. The work that police officers do, for the most part, is noble for the reason that they put their life on the line for everyone, every day. There is no doubt a great deal of personal fulfillment that comes from the duties and responsibilities assigned to police officers, because they get to help out in the community.
