Explain and discuss the planning, organizing leading controlling functions of management and determine whether or not managers really do more than carry out these four functions.
Organizations need managers.

Managers are people that organize and arrange processes and tasks systematically so that organizational goals can be met efficiently and effectively. Planning, organising, controlling and leading are the four components of what is known as the functional view of management. (Davidson, P Simon, A Woods, P Griffin, W R 2009, p.5) This view of management is very much theoretically sound and can be applied to a lot of organizations today. According to (Fells, 2000, p. 345-360) planning, organising, leading and controlling framework is still relevant today and is sufficient in describing the functions of managers as a whole.
Novelist Richard Cushing once said, “Always plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.” Planning is one of the functions of management and can be defined as setting the organization’s goals, establishing strategies for achieving those goals, and developing plans to integrate and coordinate work activities. Simply put, it concerns both the ends (what) and the means (how). (Robbins & Coulter, 2009, p.160)

When the organizational goals and plans have been set (planning), the next step is organizing. This function of management can be described as simply “working the plan.” According to Robbins & Coulter (2009), organizing involves determining what work needs to be done and then constructing the general framework in which all the tasks can be carried out both efficiently and effectively.

Leading can be defined as directing the various components of the task force toward the attainment of organizational objectives. Inspiring subordinates, communicating effectively and the effective use of authority is essential in leading successfully. (Marilyn & Helms, 2006) In addition to that, leading can also be described as having to
