Poetry Gone Bad
I dedicate this book to my family. You all keep me going.
A special mention for those who in the darkest of times helped.
And my children Lauren, Ewan, Emily and Zack stop growing so fast.
Marissa I owe you one..

Introduction
Evocation of Feeling is a book written to show how the day to day actions and surroundings of people and events can change your emotions. I have included the title a Culture of Poetry showing that a mixture of everyday life has inspired me to write poetry, regardless of style. My poetry is certainly a mixture of forms and I hope you enjoy it.
And to the critics, yes I have broken some of the sacred poetry rules. Times they are a changing.

SAND SOLDIER

Back Pack weighing me down.
The sand torments me
My feet slip down further and deeper into the sand.
Every step painful.
The gun I carry no use, no need for it at all, my grip does not fail.
How can a distant sun seem so hot.
Why am I here?.
The heat seems to gust through my body feeling so weak.
"KEEP MOVING", the shout goes out one bullet I could take him out. Mouth so dry blisters form inside.
Why am I here?. Am I here to be a hero?.
No to risky want to stay alive.
Am I here to

Pseudo-profound bullshit is defined as something made with the intent to impress absent of any concern for the truth. The statement will have to contain no information, adequate meaning, and truth. This argues that the term “bullshit” defines a type of misrepresentation which is different from lying and for which there is no other real label. The article explores a specific subtype that the authors call “pseudo-profound bullshit” which is where the writers intention is to sound profound without really saying anything.…

When I was a kid, about 5 to 8 years old, my hands would always get cold whenever the surrounding air is chilly. My dad would always tell me to rub them together, like you would in order to make fire. And so I did it. I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. My fingers grind against each other from the tips of my little fingers to the base of my palm, but none of this worked. My hands still are cold, stone cold. Then my dad said after watching me rub for a whole 3 minutes: You can stop rubbing your hands when they are warm again, as rubbing would make your skin raw. I replied: But they're still cold. Then he told me to hold out my hand and he started rubbing warmth into my hands; his strong, rough hands massaging my palms, my fingers, then suddenly my hands are warm again. After a while, I wondered: will my hands ever become tough and strong like my father's?…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

To change is to transform, to undergo metamorphosis. It is essential and unavoidable in life. ‘In black and white' by Eleni Fourtouni and ‘My brother' by Bruce Dawe attempt to encapsulate the essence of change and demonstrate its complexity. The poets create this imagery and make their point through techniques and structure.…

In Emily Dickinson's poem "I Felt a Funeral in My Brain", Dickinson describes what seems to be a funeral in her mind. When one thinks of a funeral, they usually think of a ceremony for a person who has died. This funeral that Dickinson is experiencing in her brain, is actually a funeral for the death of her mind. Emily Dickinson describes events that usually take place at a funeral but the ideas she pitches to the reader doesn't exactly exemplify your ideal funeral. She tells the reader how there are mourners, a service, lifting of a box implying it is a coffin and nobody is being burried. In Emily Dickenson's poem, the reader can elaborate upon elements of poetry such as imagery, symbolism, diction, and metaphor that create a better sense of understanding.…

Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I described above are just some of the horrifying scenes described by Mayes. This poem spoke to me about the pain and suffering patients endure while staying in a hospital (whether it be a mental hospital or a medical hospital) and the horrific images the staff see daily. Mayes uses several types of imagery and literary tropes in his poem to give readers an intense visual sensation as they read his poem. The visuals Mayes placed in my own mind while I read this poem were intensely real and stuck with me long after I studied the poem.…
