POEMS DUE BEFORE APRIL VACATION… POWERPOINT DUE AFTER VACATION!

Total Point Value: 200 Points
150 Points for Poetry/ 50 Points for Media Appearance
To complete this unit, you will be creating a poetry PowerPoint that chronicles (or records) five important events from The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.

Procedure: 1) Pick five events 2) Write a poem for each event. These can be done in first, second, or third person. 3) Use four types of figurative language in EACH poem. 4) Use a different format (haiku, sonnet, ballad, etc.) for EACH poem 5) One MUST be a sonnet 6) Type the poems 7) Place them in chronological order (in order of how they occur in the book) 8) Print out the poems and staple them 9) Begin the process of creating the PowerPoint. 10) Check over your FCA’s to make sure nothing is missing.

FCA’s:
The Poetry • Each poem uses four types of HIGHLIGHTED figurative language (40 Points) • Poems are at least SIX LINES long and use ONLY strong verbs and word choice (50 Points) • Each poem is a correct example of a different poetry format, including at least one sonnet (described on the poetry sheet) (50 Points)

    Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I described above are just some of the horrifying scenes described by Mayes. This poem spoke to me about the pain and suffering patients endure while staying in a hospital (whether it be a mental hospital or a medical hospital) and the horrific images the staff see daily. Mayes uses several types of imagery and literary tropes in his poem to give readers an intense visual sensation as they read his poem. The visuals Mayes placed in my own mind while I read this poem were intensely real and stuck with me long after I studied the poem.…
