Poem Reflection
I've only recently discovered how relaxing and soothing the art of poetry can be. Before, I looked at the flowing words and expressive lines of poetry with scorn. How could people become so utterly in love with such an odd type of writing? What was the point of learning about the different structures of haikus and sonnets? All I knew was how difficult the poetry section of my English class was going to be. However, after writing these twenty poems, my outlook as changed completely. When I sat in front of my computer monitor, the words simply came to me and poured out from my fingertips to the screen. The ability to use my vast knowledge of adjectives from our four hundred vocabulary words seemed exhilarating to me.

My poems are for myself to enjoy. They may seem boring or meaningless to others, but when I read them, it reminds me of my feelings at the time I was writing. Looking back on the poems I wrote my freshman year of English, I can only laugh and feel proud of what I've accomplished. Instead of stiff rhyming patterns that made no sense, my poems are now filled with true emotions, following no boundaries of strict iambic pentameter.

I first approached this project with caution, unsure of what it would turn out and how time-consuming it would be. However, I'm grateful for this opportunity to explore the freedom of poetry. By having no firm guidelines on how to format each poem, I've learned that we each can have our own style of

Sometimes when people think about the calming sound of a night-time melody, the catchy beat of a popular song, or simply the words in a poem that captures how you feel and you can perfectly relate to. What comes to mind when we mention a poem? Usually what people think or what people’s thoughts go to, are emotions and rhyme. I think it takes a little more of each person’s perspective into the situation, not only the writer’s but also the reader’s perspective, which is what gives that extra spark to the piece. The literary element that is the most important to bring a poem to life is imagery; it would help the reader…

Poetry is not something that I would normally be interested in. I’ve tried writing poetry only to end up a dismal failure. I’ve tried to read poetry only to end up bored halfway through. I’ve always wanted to be one of those soulful poetic types who walk around with a serene look on their faces, snapping their fingers when something tickles their fancy but I’ve never quite made that transition. Poetry, to me, seems to be a fanciful, ethereal pursuit that has somehow always gone over my head no matter how hard I’ve tried. Since I’ve failed miserably at being a poet or even enjoying poetry, you can imagine my surprise when I read “Dog’s Death” and not only enjoyed it but it touched my heart. A good poem knows how to grab not only the reader’s attention but will snag the reader’s emotions and take them on a roller coaster; whether it has a happy or a sad ending the poem should keep the reader’s interest until the end.…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I described above are just some of the horrifying scenes described by Mayes. This poem spoke to me about the pain and suffering patients endure while staying in a hospital (whether it be a mental hospital or a medical hospital) and the horrific images the staff see daily. Mayes uses several types of imagery and literary tropes in his poem to give readers an intense visual sensation as they read his poem. The visuals Mayes placed in my own mind while I read this poem were intensely real and stuck with me long after I studied the poem.…

My views on poems...I have the hardest time coming up with a good poem I enjoy writing but not in a certain format or have to follow a topic I enjoy free writing about things in my life but putting together a poetry portfolio was pretty funny because I got to laugh at my amazing poems. I don't find poems all that bad there quite enjoyable to write once you get into them. And you can express your views on things how you are feeling. It is a great way to get out what you wish you could say to someone but just putting it on paper.…

I remember when I first experienced goosebumps raise on my arms and send a shiver through my body, simply because the words leaving the speaker's lips left such an imprint on me. I didn’t think that a simple sentence could bring tears to my eyes, could cause me to react in any physical way. I didn’t even know the author. Yet, it still amazes me anytime I react to such a poem. The emotions that the author pours into every word and every syllable is astounding. Each pause and breath tell a story on their own. I knew that I had to try. I wanted to make people feel the way like I did when I first heard them, but because it was my words that made them react.…

Lastly, writing poetry has become my passion. It is the perfect way for me to express the emotions I feel in a manner that is not very common. During writers craft the genre that I enjoyed writing most was poetry. I love everything about poetry. Poetry is a piece of writing that can be interpreted in many different ways while being written in one. My favorite part about class was writing poetry and the many different types of poems we wrote. I was not too big on the fact of reading poems in class sometimes that where too hard for me to understand. I am more of a reader who likes to know what is going on without having to read a poem over and over again to figure out what the poet was trying to say. I like more of the simple poetry that can easily be read by a ten year old and still have a lot of meaning to it. Poetry as so many different unique ways you can express yourself in certain formats. The type of poem that I love the most is the Shakespearean sonnet. The reason why I love to listen and write these poems the most is because I tend to like the ones that rhyme more. Although I know that poems that don't have to rhyme are said to be even harder to write it doesn't rhyme and still has to catch someone's attention and entertain them in some way. I think it is always a test and a fun way to get into your poem by trying to having meaning in the poem, at the same time have it rhyme, and most importantly trying to have it make sense. The reason I am so into rhyming is because growing up as a kid, my parents will always read me bed time poems that always rhymed and from that point on I only saw a poem as a piece of writing that meant a lot through the words you use and how they rhyme with one another. The poem that I heard every night was “Mockingbird”. What I learned a lot during writers craft while writing poems is when you write a good poem, one you really like, I immediately write another. Usually one poem was my peak for the night, and if I write another one then I can maybe turn a great poem into a masterpiece. There’s only one way to find out. Also I learned that…

Poems are great because you get to choose how you want it to be organized. I named the poem “Structure”. Most poems have a specific structural pattern that they follow. To give the poem some simple structure, I made it so that each verse in my poem has eight syllables and I used a basic rhyming scheme. I made the first and last verses very similar to emphasize that structure is needed everywhere. Without structure, people wouldn’t be able to do anything. Everything has some basic structure. Houses and building have structure and some furniture like beds have structure. This is why I said that we would all be tired without structure. I also said that structure helps me think to further emphasize that we need structure and to connect it to my message. The audience for this genre would be everyone ten and up because everyone can read poems and everyone needs structure, but kids might not understand a poem because poems use many words to talk about one…
