Players Should Be Paid
Students who have experienced the college athletics process usually believe that players should be paid. Former Quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide, AJ McCarron as well as South Carolina’s former Defensive End, Jadeveon Clowney, believe that players should be given some money. These two players understand the amount of time and effort required to perform at a Division 1 level. However, these ideas are generated without much background knowledge and understanding of the financial requirements it would take to do so. The philosophy adopted by most people opposed to the payment of players is that we are already giving them endless amounts of money for benefits and scholarships. Plus, it would nearly be impossible to equally pay all athletes in addition to their scholarships due to limited funds available. Athletes agree that a large amount of their time is devoted to their sport, but the immense amount of benefits and scholarships that correlate with their hard work evens the playing field. Professional organizations disagree with the payment of players which contradicts the thoughts of some of the sports analysts and more renown players of their game. The controversy of paying players has not been as prominent in the past years. However, with the tremendous amount of money circulating through the college sports atmosphere, players start to wonder when they will get their piece of the pie, especially since they are the reason the money is even there. Problems still remain as other ideas of players earning revenue arise, such as if athletes should be allowed to sale the paraphernalia associated with their name, such as autographs, jerseys, and other sport related items for their own gain. As time advances, new proposals arise bringing new controversy over the minds of athletes across the nation. Even with that being said, the overall the advantages of paying college athletes is to weak and troublesome for the colleges that they attend and would be near to impossible for college athletes to receive money for

    Today, sports are no longer fun and games, sports are a business, and college sports are no different. Division I college sports provide a huge source of universities’ income. The school receives money from ticket sales, television contracts, and sport-related merchandise, along with many other sports related revenue builders. The athletes on the other hand, receive their scholarship and little more. While the idea of receiving a free college education is something few would complain about; when the issue is more closely examined it becomes evident that it is not enough. Universities are exploiting athletes, and recently the problems that this creates have become more prominent. More and more athletes are now leaving school early to enter the professional leagues in order to make money. There have also been more reports of violations surrounding university boosters and alumni paying players. Furthermore, athletes have been accused of making deals with gamblers and altering the outcome of games. All of these problems could be minimized, if not completely eliminated, by adopting a program for compensating student athletes. College athletes are exploited by their schools, which make millions of dollars off of them. This leads to violations, students leaving college early, and student-athletes that cannot even afford to do anything that their sport doesn’t sponsor.
