Plastec Case Study #2 Keeping motivation in the work place demands not only the workers attention and focus but the employer’s attention as well. There are many ways to keep your workers motivated. The main point is to keep them satisfied. There are several different ways to keep workers satisfied, compensation, benefits and in the authors opinion one of the most important ways usually is overlooked and that is work atmosphere. The Plastec Company must look at these factors when trying to reduce turnover and increase productivity. The first way to keep your workers motivated is through wages and benefits that your organization offers. The better the compensation package provided by the employer the higher job satisfaction an employee will have and overall increases the likeliness that they will remain with the company. This reduces your turnover and as a result keeps production steady by reducing the turnover training factor. You want to offer wages and benefits that allow your company to be profitable. However at the same time you want to be competitive with other local organizations when it comes to wages and benefits, this reduces turn over and increases worker motivation. According to the HR Council for the Voluntary & Non-profit Sector: “Salary surveys are conducted with numerous employers in the same labor market to determine pay levels for specific job categories. Generally wage and salary surveys are conducted either by region, sector or job classification for the purposes of comparability. By participating in salary surveys, you’ll have access to information that will allow you to benchmark your organization’s compensation practices including wages, salaries, bonuses and benefit provisions against other organizations in your region or sector.” (The HR Council for the Voluntary & Non-profit Sector, n.d., figure 2) Salary surveys display the low, high as well as average salaries for a particular job position.     I work for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. ABMU Health Board was formed on 1st October 2009 as a result of a reorganisation within the NHS in Wales and consists of the former Local Health Boards for Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend. The Health Board covers a population of approximately 500,000 people and has a budget of £1.3 billion. Around 16,500 people are employed by the Health Board, 70% of whom are involved in direct patient care. The Health Board has four acute hospitals providing a range of services; these are Singleton, Morriston, Neath Port Talbot and Princess of Wales Hospitals. There are a number of smaller community hospitals primary care resource centres providing important clinical services to our residents outside of the four main acute hospital settings. The Health Board acts as the service provider for Wales and the South West of England in respect of Burns and Plastic Surgery. In addition, Forensic Mental Health services are provided to a wider community which extends across the whole of South Wales, while Learning Disability services are provided from Swansea to Cardiff. A range of community based services are also delivered in patients’ homes, via community hospitals, health centres and clinics. The Health Board contracts with independent practitioners in respect of primary care services which are delivered by General Practitioners, Opticians, Pharmacists and Dentists. There are 77 General Practices across the Health Board.
