Plagiarism in Essay Writing Is Form of Cheating. Do You Agree?
Plagiarism is not a crime, but it is a moral offence. Plagiarism is the act of copying someone else’s original idea and passing it as one’s own work. While each university has different policy and regulations against plagiarism some examples of it are: Direct copying from original sources, copying material and making slight changes to it and paraphrasing. Plagiarism in essay writing is cheating, and students who use someone else’s intellectual property without permission, or having someone else do their essay work are breaking the educational institution regulations. These practices of cheating create lack of creativity, inability to gain new knowledge and disrespect towards the professor and the original author.

Copy and paste plagiarism is a common phenomenon occurring within universities and colleges. According to Lars R. Jones attempting to pass of, as personal work, a whole work or any part of a work belonging to another person, group or institution is Academic dishonesty and is strictly forbidden by all educational institutions. Academic dishonesty has negative implications in both the classroom and in the real world. Students who have cheated in their Essays and the university has not detected it, are likely to pass the subject with a high mark while in reality that is not a true reflection of their ability. As a consequence, there will be times when the student will have to put the knowledge into practise, and by plagiarising an essay the student will not have gained the required knowledge, rather the student has shown disrespect for the professor and the original author.

In some instances plagiarism is caused by students unintentionally. Brian Martin, the author of Plagiarism and Responsibility claims that a lot of students are unaware of their university policy and regulations regarding paraphrasing, and that the students are unfamiliar with the correct method of paraphrasing which leads to their essay being considered plagiarised, even though it

Plagiarism is one of the largest epidemics we have to thank the internet for. Plagiarism is known as literary theft and is when somebody knowingly takes somebody else’s ideas or words as if they were their own and not providing due credit. With the fast paced life style of students today, plagiarism is as easy as copy, paste and done. Many students have a catch me if you can mentality and since the penalties are sometimes not that severe if caught, students are willing to take the risk. With the online college courses available, people of all ages are going back to school. Most older students find school more difficult and time consuming than it was years ago and with job and family responsibilities, search the internet, copy bits and pieces from articles, blogs or school sites, not even thinking they are plagiarizing and completing a report in a fraction of the time spent doing a report before the internet. A long night in the library, gathering a fact from encyclopedias, newspapers, magazines and books was when plagiarizing was difficult and easily detected. Cut and paste was clipping articles from professional journalist and pasting them onto paper with Elmer’s glue. Now it is very easy to gather large amounts of information, cut and paste it into word processing software and forget to put the author or some quotes around copied passages. At least most colleges have some sort of formatting such as ADA that requires students to at least rewrite some of the copied material in order to meet the format requirements. Some instructors have their students submit writing assignments in segments over several weeks like the outline, thesis statement, rough draft and then the final draft. This at least makes coping reports more difficult. Plagiarizing is wrong because you deny yourself the chance to learn and develop skills you may be need in your future profession. You put in question your integrity, not only for your instructors but future employers. You…

Many are noticing how plagiarism is becoming a more prevalent problem in schools today and the thought of plagiarism is on many intellectual minds. Warnings about plagarism are included on every syllabus distributed on the first day of class, accompanied by a lengthy discussion of the same topic delivered from almost every teacher. • The most direct form of plagiarism is copying, word for word, without acknowledging the source, or where your information came from. A more indirect form is obtaining and changing material from a source without acknowledgment. • If you quote directly or obtain material from a source you must acknowledge your source with correct referencing. • Students should be particularly aware of the dangers of plagiarism from the Internet. Although this is rich source of information freely available to all students and staff, copying and pasting the work of others from the Internet is a form of plagiarism.…

Plagiarizing is something that can cause a student to get more than just a zero on a paper or report. Lack of knowledge, rules, and laws dealing with plagiarism are not an acceptable excuse to teachers, professors, or college deans. Most colleges and universities have a very strict stance on students who plagiarize a report or paper. Using the works of someone else without giving the proper cite of that work can cause a student to be put on probation, receive a zero on their paper, and even a zero for that subject for the entire semester. My understanding of plagiarism is when someone takes the words or works from something that someone has researched and written and uses those parts or complete works as their own words or work. Cut and paste, committing plagiarism is more serious than just the act of cutting and pasting.…

Plagiarism is when a person uses another person’s work, words, or ideas as if they were using their own. When a person plagiarizes they can simply use a few lines from another person’s creation or just a few quotes without citing a reference. Plagiarism can be as simple as that or more detailed as when someone uses an entire composition and passes it off as his/her own. However when a person plagiarizes they are doing great harm to themselves. Plagiarism comes with consequences that are often severe.…

Plagiarism is a very common way of cheating on papers at all levels of education. Plagiarism if caught has severe consequences and will result in most situations in you regretting not taking the time and effort to use your own knowledge and words. Not only is plagiarism cheating, but also it is stealing. By choosing to plagiarize and copy someone else’s words you are choosing to steal from them and stealing is never ok. However if you are not educated on plagiarism and want it is and the different forms of it you can easily make the mistake of plagiarizing and may not even mean too. You could for example paraphrase and think that because you did not word for word plagiarize that it is ok when in fact it is not. That is why it is important to check into websites like wsulibs.wsu.edu/plagiarism. This website is great because not only does it go over the little information like what teachers look for when searching for plagiarism but also how to avoid it and the different forms and variances there are. For example in the section about how to find plagiarism it says for teachers to look for something as small as the students tone in the paper changing. In the How to Avoid plagiarizing it gives you steps to follow in order to not plagiarize and in my opinion is a very useful section that can help any grasp a better understanding on how to use your own words and stay out of trouble plagiarizing. This section goes on to give you examples on the differences between paraphrasing and summarizing. This part is useful to know because I think that is one of the harder parts about plagiarizing for people. When they try to “summarize” someone’s words but in turn actually paraphrase and un intentionally plagiarize and cheat. Overall the best tip I obtained from this website on how to avoid plagiarizing was to use your own unique words and sentences while writing because it is plagiarizing…

The word plagiarism originates from the Latin word, plagiarius, which means “kidnapper” (Fleming, nd), meaning, when people take words or phrases from any publication and publish them as their own. “Plagiarism is the failure to acknowledge your sources or the act of making it appear that someone else 's work is your own…” (Longman, nd). Students that don’t acknowledge this offence will face severe consequences, such as a failing grade in their essay or even expulsion. “Plagiarism is treated very seriously and plagiarised work is usually disqualified…” (Cottrell. S, (2008), p128, The Study Skills Handbook, Palgrave: Basingstoke) A record will not only affect you graduate but will affect your future career. An example of these consequences involves a psychiatrist plagiarising other publishers work in at least nine different cases (Wainwright, 2008). Once the evidence was found, he was forced to suspend practice for three months. Along with the suspension, his reputation was ruined in his academic field.…

In academic settings, there is one crucial academic ethical standard that students must abide by and that is to not produce plagiarized documents. In the following paper, there will be an outline of a specific definition of plagiarism. Along with the definition with plagiarism, there is also a discussion of why students plagiarize. Plagiarism have become a major problem in academic institutions due to the clever ways that students misuse scholarly information for their own benefit of learning and understanding the information presented in the courses that they are enrolled in. This examination of plagiarism will also review the topics of intentional versus unintentional plagiarism, how to properly cite a paper by using direct quoting, paraphrasing and citing references. In the computer age, the fear is that students will use the internet to obtain analysis, interpretation or even complete assignments and then submit these as their own work. Plagiarism is not just limited to academics, but also in our whole multimedia society.…

A lot of times students dont know where or how they broke schools policy by using plagiarism or most times dont even know what plagiarism is. Today I will go over a few things with you and why or how plagiarism occurs. Plagiarism is a form of theft that is not where you actually have taken a hard object but where you have taken words, sentences, paragraphs, and in some instances the whole paper. You dont realize it but plagiarism is a serious offense and is a big deal in the academic world and if you was to to do it on the business side of things it would be a even bigger deal because of the things that are copywritten and published by companys. It is very important that you do you own work and to be original with it, not for you personal reasons but for also a academic standpoint. Be aware that if you are just taking one sentence or phrase from something you have researched to make sure you cite it because if you dont that is also another form a plagiarism, the work you are writing down you a presenting as if it is your own work but in reality you have stolen someone else work as your own. When it comes to academic dishonesty it comes in different forms besides just plagiarism, it could also be dealing with taking something from a classmate or even taking a exam for another person an not your own. For future references if you do not know something please dont hesitate to ask questions or just cite everything you are not sure about to avoid a failing grade on your material.…
