Plagiarism Case Study
Read the College Paper Case Study and consider how you would rate the responsibility of each person involved. Next, review the University of the People's Academic Integrity and Code of Conduct Statements. When you're ready, create a post that uses the case study and the College's statements to discuss what you believe about plagiarism. Discuss the strategies you will use to ensure that you will not inadvertently plagiarize while engaged in your studies at UoPeople. and explain why you made the decisions you did.
After readying the case study, I realized quickly that to have a good understanding of what happened that much of the context was missing. Regardless of the seriousness of plagiarism, and it is very serious, unless the two …show more content…
If this was Reggies first offence in plagarism, I would say that the instructor is more responsible for reggies grade, due to the fact that a failing grade in the course on a first offence seems like it would be more driven on instructors discretion.
However, if it was not Reggies first offence, then I would say the academic counselor with be more responsbible, due to the fact that it would seem to be standard procedure for a failing grade in the course and therefore the instructor would not have much discretion. Also, the only advice provided by the counselor was to warn about taking others ideas. If Reggies was a repeat offender, I think the counselor should have impressed on him the steep consequence of potential plagarism again.
Reading from the disciplinary process for UOPeople in the undergraduate catalogue, the first violation is a warning from the instructor and a 0 on the assignment. It seems like a first offence scenerio has a lot more value as a hard lesson about plagiarism, and to provide an opportunity to salvage the mistake …show more content…
According to Bailey (2011), there seems to be a general issue with the level of response or disciplinary actions towards students regardless the level of plagiarism, the idea of a 'zero tolerance policy' in fighting plagiarism seems to result in harsh consequences for students who make small mistakes (e.g. Not achieving 100% accuracy on APA citation requirements) and not enough consequence for those who commit large scale plagiarism (e.g. Purchasing a paper from a service) , and that "Students, however, talk about a climate of fear, an environment where they feel even a mistake could cost them their academic career. " (Bailey, 2011). I understand this sentiment as most documentation from universities on plagiarism and the consequence seem to, regardless of wording, play the role of a scare tactic towards students.
