The chart above shows salaries and wages for the Chesapeake, Virginia Police Department. The chart illustrates the current salaries and wages, as well as what it would look like with different pay raises. The current salary is listed first, followed by a 2 percent increase, then an increase of 4 and 5 percent. The effect of pay raises for the department, would mean the overall city budget would be affected. Historically the department has received minimal salary increases. This past year salaries and wages saw only a 0.3% pay increase. Employee benefits did raise a modest 3.8%. The department seems overdue for a pay raise that would at least equal the cost of living increases. A 4% increase would appear to be the appropriate raise for the department for FY 2014.…

Throughout the school years, the level of difficulty of assigned papers go up. English classes pile up on essays but students are having difficulty writing them. In English classes, students learn a variety of skills but the one skill that needs to be brushed upon everytime is grammar. Some schools do not teach grammar until a certain age, usually around 3rd grade, and then it is glossed over after that. Writing needs to be taught at an earlier age.…

Is there any time you ask yourself why people live in the same Earth but different colors, why there are so many countries instead of just one nation or how explores discovered new lands? To answer all that questions, we have to look at the history. But is history always true? An ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle said that literature is truer than history. Literature also reflects the past. It is very lively and colorful like history. Then why did he say that? Both literature and history are crucial, they compensate for each other and play their own important part in our society and life. However, I still agree with Aristotle.…

English occupies an important position in global education at the moment. It seems to be seen as a high status language with an inherent connection to capitalism and globalism. The example websites given, one from a university in the Netherlands and the other from Brazil. Both websites are presented in English as well as their national language, despite the fact that English is a secondary language in both nations. This status, rivalling even the official language of the country, seems to have sprung from a number of sources, not the least the general impression that English has become the new lingua franca. The prestige and encroaching ubiquity of English has contributed to it 's increasingly high position within academia. The history of colonialism, the status of English schools in the wider global community and the inexorable link most countries place between capitalism and English. It is also greatly affected by the various policies adopted by countries. Of course this all begs the question of whether the position of English in higher education is a beneficial one, or another form of English imperialism.…

English as a lingua franca I am going to tell you something about English as a lingua franca. I will be talking about 3 different subjects concerning English as a lingua franca and a lingua franca in common. First of all I will tell you something about the purpose of a lingua franca, or in other words; What is a lingua franca. Secondly I will give some reasons why a lingua franca should be or might be introduced. Then last but not least I will mention some of the problem which might occur when you’re trying to introduce a lingua franca. What is a lingua franca? A lingua franca is a language which would be used as a second language by all people. Maybe some of you have ever heard about Esperanto. It was created in 1859 by dr. Ludwik Zamenhof. Dr. Zamenhof was born in the former Russian part of Poland. His official profession was doctor. The city where he was born, Bialystok, it was common that the people where speaking Russian, Polish, Latvian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian and German. At the end of the 19th century Dr. Zamenhof wrote a book for which he was using the pseudonym “Dr. Esperanto”. This name was based on his hope for a new language. This language supposed to become a language which would be used and learned by everyone, so everybody would be able to understand each other and therefore the people might appreciate each other a bit more than when they are not able to understand each other. Dr. Zamenhof died in Warsaw in 1917. He never saw his ideal to have one common language become reality just partly. Since this time people became more and more interested in one common language, but so far nobody succeeded. English is one of the most mentioned languages when people are talking about a lingua franca, that’s one of the reasons why I chose English as a lingua franca as the subject of my presentation. Now I will tell you something about the reasons why we should have English as a lingua franca. First of all English is already used a lot all over the world.…
