Pit Bulls What is the first thing most people think when they see a Pit Bull terrier? More often than not, people associate this breed of dog with terror, violence, and other common misconceptions. Instead of taking the time to learn about them, people simply believe the myths and negative news stories about them. Pit Bulls are as gentle as any other breed of dog, but thanks to myth and lack of knowledge about them the Pit Bull breed has been stereotyped, demonized, and misunderstood. There is no record of exactly when the Pit Bull breed came into existence but many believe that it was at least 150 years ago in England. The sport of Bull Baiting was very much alive and the breed is thought to have been created around then by breeding bulldogs and terriers(Wiki). In the late 18th and early 19th century in America, Pit Bulls were used for many things including hunting, cattle driving, protection, and to carry messages in battle during WWI and II. Over time, Pit Bulls became more and more domesticated with their loyalty, caring, and gentle nature with their owners, making them outstanding house pets.(Wiki). Pit Bulls are great family pets; they only react negatively towards aggression and small children do not give off any signs of aggression. In fact, they have a very high pain tolerance and happily put up with rough child play(dogbreedinfo) Recent studies have shown that Pit Bulls are very smart dogs and perform very high on intelligence tests. This is one reason why many are used for services including search and rescue, police dogs, border patrol dogs, and drug sniffing. Furthermore, they are the most obedient, loving, protective, loyal, and playful dogs anyone can own. My friend own a Pit named Remi and she is the most obedient dog I have ever met. Pit Bulls only get a bad rap from all the news stories about them; any time another type of dog bites someone it doesn’t show up in the news, but if a Pit Bull bites

Unfortunately in today's society there have been many cases of over breeding for this dog which has created temperament problems in their bloodlines, leading to inconsistent behavior. Pit Bulls over bred today are usually used to fight illegally in run down urban areas or are kept outside and are used to guard junkyards, people's houses or private property. The over breeding of these dogs led to people housing them that were not qualified to handle this breed. Though they do not get overly large they have a body mass that can weigh up to 90 pounds, and a lockjaw with 800 pounds of pressure. These dogs are very smart, but require a lot of care and attention. The Pit Bull will also learn to imitate the behavior of its owner. People who neglect these dogs or use aggressive force to train them will often have an aggressive dog likely to turn and attack. When kept in safe living conditions and trained properly these dogs are excellent family pets with a natural guard dog instinct to protect its…

An Anonymous author stated, “Pitbull’s are beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man without the vices.” (Anonymous) As a Pitbull owner, I feel that Pitbull’s are often misunderstood animals. In reality any animal, pitbull or even a Chihuahua can be mean or gentle. Love and caring wins out with animals just like it does with humans. Affection is what creates a good or bad dog. Not their type of breed or genetic makeup.…

Despite this common opinion, an experiment was once performed. Fifty Pit Bulls were rescued from a fighting ring. Forty nine of the fifty dogs were rehabilitated. Some went to shelters such as Best Friends and many are well-loved family members today. The testing used to determine these dogs' ability to fit into society was exhaustive, extensive, and carefully carried out. Pit Bulls are different from other dogs and potential owners need to be made aware of the facts before considering rescuing or purchasing one. For example, a dog lover who has had Bichons all her life will be sorely surprised unless she does her homework and understand the bully breeds. Pits need a lot of structure, a very pronounced human alpha, training, exercise and lots of attention. The owner needs consistency, time, energy and quite possibly some…

Pit bulls are not a bad breed of dogs as people say they are. They're nice dogs when treated right. They are only aggressive but they're breeding and training. They can't be bad dogs because they don't have a conscious. Michael Vick proved the dogs could be rehabilitated and put Into good homes. All but one dog was ruled safe from aggression. Would it surprise you to learn that pit bulls used to be America’s darlings? Before the mid-80s, stories of pit bull attacks are practically non-existent. There is even some confusion over exactly which breed of dog is a pit bull — the definition includes the American pit bull terrier, the Staffordshire terrier and, at times, the bulldog. This confusion seems to have dogged the breed from the beginning,…

They are quite loyal dogs. Pit bulls tend to make terrible guard dogs, they love people too much. However, this is not always a good thing. Pmarinc says “because pit bulls are so people-orientated they do not make good guard dogs. Unless you just want them to smother intruders with hugs and kisses.” Also, because pit bulls love their owners so much, they will do anything for them. Even if their owner is a criminal commit crimes. The myth that pit bulls are extremely vicious is false, pit bulls are only vicious if you raise them to be. Pit bulls were bred to be in dog fights and that is why they got a bad…

Pit bulls and terrier breeds were created in early 19th century, for the popular spectator sports of bull- and bear-baiting. In 1898 the UKC, Britain's equivalent of the AKC, named these bull dogs the American Pit Bull Terrier. The AKC decided to recognize the breed in the early 1930s--but under a new name. Intending to separate it from its pit-fighting past, the AKC named it the American Staffordshire terrier, also known as a pit bull. These dogs have been used for protection not only in homes but in war, with the police and even with celebrities. Unfortunately, this same breed of dog now has a bad reputation, being called a vicious breed of dog and bully’s. I would have to disagree though, I believe that yes, there are some very mean pit bulls out there but there are also very nice and even famous ones. Not all pit bulls can be bad they aren’t born that way, they are raised that way. Saying a pit bull is born aggressive is kind of like saying a baby is born to hate.…

Pitbulls should not be put down based on their breed. Discrimination on pitbulls would put a negative effect on them causing people to think they are dangerous. And leading to them not being adopted or put down. For example a James A. Serpell who is a director at an Animal Society In Pennsylvania he believes that people stereotype Pitbulls like we stereotype humans. "As human beings we tend to stereotype dog breeds just as we stereotype people," (QTD in Botkin-Kowacki). This means that people are discriminating Pitt bulls just as humans would with other humans based on race, Looks, and Religious beliefs. This is not okay because if dogs were human this would be a discrimination issue, which means that the dogs are being treated unfairly or unequally for something that they have no control over. People should not ban pit bulls just because just because they are labeled as dangerous. Stereotyping pitbulls would be discrimination and unfair. Another example is that people see that pitbulls are muscular and have a different body figure than other dog breeds. According to Alanna Devine she says people just see the muscles and they say it is a pitbull. “People tend to…

“In the 70’s they blamed the Dobermans, in the 80’s they blamed the German shepherd, in the 90’s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the Pit bull” (Cesar Millan). Everyday pit-bulls face criticism due to their history, what people fail to realize is the breed is not born aggressive and vicious, just as humans are not born that way either. As a puppy grows up they should be trained and have necessary discipline when they misbehave and rewards for behaving. The owner is the one responsible for discipline, they are the ones in control and should take full responsibility for the way their dog behaves. Just as one does not want to be judged by their race, appearance or their past, what makes it okay to discriminate against Pit-bulls by their appearance and a nasty reputation owners chose to create for entertainment. Too often the Pit-bull breed is misunderstood due to myths and lack of knowledge, although facts and statistics prove the Pit-bull is indeed a misunderstood breed. It is clear laws restricting pit-bulls are not based on accurate information.…
