Pina Bausch
Philippina Bausch (better known as Pina Bausch) was a German performer in the style of modern dance, a ballet director, dance teacher and choreographer born on the 27th July 1940 in Solingen. At the age of 15, she was accepted into Folkwangschule (Folkwang Academy). Pina has created a company called Tanztheatre Wuppertal Pina Bausch which performs all around the world. She was married to Rolf Borzik from the Netherlands who was a costume designer that unfortunately died from leukaemia in 1980. The following year she met Ronald Kay and had a child with him called Ralf-Salamon. Unfortunately, on the 30th June 2009 from lung cancer due to excessive smoking.
Bausch was a choreographer in modern dance and has won 4 awards for her past pieces, such as the Goethe Prize the year before her death. One of her well known pieces is Wicked Fairy which has a lot of strong responses. Her drive for success and determination has inspired many other known performers like David Bowie. Either you hate her way of doing things or you appreciate it. Not everyone thought her style was as amazing as it was made out to be for example her choreographed performance; As mentioned above, Philippina was a ballet dancer from her adolescent years and the style of Modern Dance derives from ballet which is most likely what inspired her to choreography and teach this dance style.
Despite her tragic death in 2009, Pina will always have a strong legacy in dramatic physical theatre and as she once said herself; “When I first began choreographing, I never thought of it choreographing but as expressing feelings. Though every piece is different, they are all trying to get at certain things that are difficult to put into words.
