Pill Bug Synthesis
Some conclusions that we got were that pill bugs are not well adapted to areas that might be colder or pill bugs won’t exist in that type of weather. Pill Bugs live under rocks or even beneath the rocks. As it is seen on figure 1 the pill bugs had more movement on the 25 C than in the other temperatures. Therefore, pill bugs 25 C is their normal habitat temperature because it has a perfect weather for them to be able to survive. One probable error that the group had was when one of the pill bugs die during the 0 C temperature because it was too cold for them. At the end of the result it was conclusive that the pill bugs had few movements during colder temperatures like 0 C and 35

For this project I had observed the coolest bug balls on earth, the roly- poly. They are commonly known as the roly-poly, also pill bug, and wood lice. Its scientific name is Armadilidum vulgare. It is actually not an insect, it is an isopod ( a type of arthropod). It’s genus is Armadilidum, it’s Phylum is Arthopoda, and Subphylum is Crustacea. I have observed that the exoskeleton is a blue-gray, it is an invertebrate, it’s mouth, antennae and eyes are located on it’s head, and it rolls into a perfect sphere as defense when being disturbed or threatened. It has 2 pairs of antennae (one barely visible), it has 2 eyes, it has 7 pairs of jointed legs, and it’s about 3/8 inches long.…

    Pill Bug Lab Report

This lab felt very “slow” because there was not a lot of action going on. The pill bugs would either walk around in circles or stay put. However, it was both fun and annoying when my group tried to put the pill bugs in the chamber and take them out. We had to put a lot of effort to get the pill bugs on to the paint brushes because they would scurry around and it would take a while to find them. Also, it was cool to see the pill bugs use their defense mechanism (it only happened once) by going into a hard circular shape when being prodded at by a paintbrush. This lab had a lot of experimental areas. The amount of water or basic or acidic solution to the paper may have affected results. For the first part of the lab, outside factors could have…

Pill bugs, or their scientific name of Armadillidium vulgare are small, very segmented insects beneficial to breaking down naturally decaying wood and leaves which is among them in moist beds of soil (The Dirt Doctor, www.dirtdoctor.com). They do not actually have eyes (only eyespots) so they rely on their antennae and help with the sensing of their surroundings. Since Pill bugs don't have eyes light is not a necessity for survival or everyday living. They have seven pairs of legs, a pair for each body segment, which makes for quicker transportation. Pill bugs also rely on a constant form of moisture because they dehydrate and dry out very easily, but have adapted the ability to absorb water vapor from their surrounding environment (PILLBUGS, www.northern.edu). Therefore, based on their lack of eyes and need for water, pill bugs generally tend to favor a darker, moist environment for an "optimal functioning" rate, however it is not completely "accepted" because pill bugs have been seen out in dry areas during periods of a…

The pill bug is an isopod that is known by a few different names. Some people call them pill bugs, sow bugs, and potato bugs. Pill bugs are not insects they are isopods. The difference between the two can be found out by looking at the bugs side by side. Isopods have two antennas but insects have only one. Another difference is the amount of legs that isopods have. Isopods have seven sets of legs while most insects have only three sets. Pill bugs do not eat much but when they do eat, it is mainly dead or decaying animals. They also eat through wet paper towels and they will eat small holes into egg cartons. Pill bugs do not live out in the open, but the mainly live under rocks and logs where the soil is moist and the air is warm. Another interesting thing about the pill bug is the way it smells things. They have a sense of smell in their feet. So if they want to smell something they will go up to the thing they want to smell and they will walk through it. Pill bugs are not fast, so when they are attacked they can’t run away from attackers. They have to protect themselves by curling up in a ball and…

Crickets are poikilotherms, meaning they are dependent on external sources to control their body temperature. When seasons change and temperatures begin to drop so does their body temperature affecting both activity levels and metabolism (Mellanby 1939). Like so many other animals, when temperature drops and it becomes harder to stay warm and and requires more food, but if movement is impaired due to the cold that becomes much harder. In a study on the activity of cave crickets, they found that 45 percent of crickets moving out of the cave was affected by temperature and humidity (Campbell 1976). This shows that there was some sort of relationship between temperature and movement of crickets out of the cave. Since this study was done during…

    I. Introduction: The purpose of this lab is to test the effect certain stimuli has on the behavior of a terrestrial isopod. These bugs are more commonly known as pill bugs and potato bugs. The objective of this experiment is to determine which kinds of habitats potato bugs favor. Potato bugs have an innate behavior called taxis which will cause the animal to move away from a stimulus that is unwanted and towards a stimulus that is favored. Different stimuli which can cause taxis to occur are light, sound, moisture, heat, or chemicals. To narrow the possibilities, this specific trial will test whether potato bugs favor fresh water environments or salt water environments. If the potato bugs are given the choice between a fresh water habitat and a salt water habitat then they will move slower and stay on the fresh water side because their bodies are more acclimated to living in damp conditions where salt water would not be accessible.…

    Honey Bee Synthesis

The enzymes the honey bee would need to synthesize and secrete would be enzymes that hydrolyze proteins (for the pollen) and enzymes that hydrolyze carbohydrates (specifically sucrose from nectar and honey). The enzyme hydrolyzing sucrose would probably be the most prominent. This hypothesis could be tested with a use of a DNA microarray. DNA microarrays use mRNA to visualize the genes in any specific cell. A fasted honey bee could be tested and then compared to that of a fed honey bee to see what genes are most prominent.…

For the sunny areas, cup 1 had 45 individuals, cup 2 had 17, cup 3 had 41 and cup 4 had 7 individuals. For the shaded areas, cup 5 had 6 individuals, cup 6 had 4, cup 7 had 12, and cup 8 had 6 individuals. As well, the number of taxa varied. In the sunny areas for cup 1, the total taxa was 4. For cups 2 and 3, it was 3 and for cup 4, it was 2. On the other hand, in the shaded area for cups 5, 6 and 7 the total taxa was 2 and for cup 8 it was…

    Therapeutic Synthesis

Current research in cancer has demonstrated that normal cells and cancer cells use glucose differently and have altered metabolism. Normal cells will utilize glucose and glycolysis (the break down of glucose) to generate ATP, which is the energy unit of the cell. ATP is then used in several reactions to keep the cell healthy and living. However, tumor cells have glycolysis rates that are up to 200 times higher than normal cells, can survive with less oxygen and produce large amounts of lactate in the process. The current most appealing hypothesis is that proliferating tumor cells use elevated glycolysis not only to generate ATP use precursors in glycolysis to make nucleotides for DNA/RNA, lipids for cell membranes and to build proteins. Therefore,…
