1) Identify the members of the Surgical Team and describe their roles
Surgeon – Dr. Slater
Responsibilities- The responsibilities of a Cardiovascular Surgeon is that they perform numerous surgery that includes valve replacement, heart bypass surgery and fixing congenital heart defects.
Physician Assistant- Lenny
Responsibilities- The key function of a surgical Physician Assistant is to assist the physician in the global management of patient care in pre-, intra- and post-operative settings.
Scrub Nurse- Maria
Responsibilities-The major role of the Scrub Nurse is that they are making sure that all material that are need are there for the Physician Assistant and the Surgeon. The Scrub Nurse usually gets the material and make sure …show more content…
In cases where the aorta is partially occluded by a C-shaped clamp, the heart is restarted and restoring of the grafts to the aorta is done in this partially occluded section of the aorta while the heart is beating.
• Protamine is given to reverse the effects of heparin.
• Chest tubes are placed in the mediastinal and pleural space to drain blood from around the heart and lungs.
• The sternum is wired together and the incisions are sutured closed.
• The patient is moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) to recover.
• Nurses in the ICU focus on recovering the patient by monitoring blood pressure, urine output and respiratory status as the patient is monitored for bleeding through the chest tubes. If there is chest tube clogging, complications such as cardiac tamponade, pneumothorax or death can ensue. Thus nurses closely monitor the chest tubes and under take methods to prevent clogging so bleeding can be monitored and complications can be prevented.
• After awakening and stabilizing in the ICU (approximately one day), the person is transferred to the cardiac surgery ward until ready to go home (approximately four days).

How many grafts are needed depending on what arteries are blocked and the locations?
One artery can affect to different areas of the heart .Yet instill the highest level can go up to quadruple bypass surgery where four arteries are occluded.
• How does this surgery affect the brain?
This procedure can potentially cause temporary memory loss and cognitive impairment and slurred speech .Although researchers are not one hundred percent sure of the damaging affects that bypass surgery has on the brain it has been mentioned that after getting surgery problems arise that were not so visible before. So the risks are great for such an important function.
• What would be the reasons for a recurring bypass surgery?
If the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle the chances of them needing another bypass surgery is very slim. If the patient does not keep a healthy lifestyle and keeps bad habits such as smoking ,poor dieting and little exercise the chances are increased and greater the risks of complications during and after the surgery.
