Philippine Democracy
I. INTRODUCTION Philippine democracy and politics has long been a troubled environment. With the recent developments regarding the Napoles case, it has only reaffirmed the fact that there are a lot of failures within this system. Aside from this latest scandal, democracy in the nation has been plagued long before the Pork Barrel story. Issues regarding nepotism, lack of transparency, participation of the masses, and so on have been present for the longest time. Being a Management student, I am sometimes disconnected with the occurrences in Philippine democracy. It may be due to the fact that the numerous scandals in our country’s politics have a numbing effect on our perception, or maybe because I’m tired of hearing more bad than good whenever I tune in to what’s happening. I realized that participation in Philippine democracy had nothing to do with your job, social status or even college course. There is something we each can bring to the table in trying to improve our democratic system. That is where my Management course comes in. I know politics and management may not always come hand in hand, but there are some aspects to management where Philippine democracy can learn from, more specifically a heightened knowledge of marketing acumen. That is why I believe that knowledge of marketing can lead to a more developed Philippine democratic environment. There are many aspects to marketing which can be applicable to democracy. It’s not a field reserved only for consumer products but can be used in a wide variety of areas. In order to really see how marketing acumen can aid in Philippine democracy, it is important to first define what is marketing, then define what democracy is.

II. MARKETING DEFINITION According to the 1American Marketing Association, “Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”

The film starts out as Solomon Vandy and his son, Dia, were on their way home and notices that a group of rebel forces were bound for their town. Many people were killed, some who were lucky got out (including Solomon's family) while some unfortunate ones got captured and made to work in the mines like Solomon. They were made to mine for diamonds, blood diamonds. These gems are used to fund wars throughout the country. While working in the mines, Solomon chanced upon a huge pink diamond. He was caught by the commander of the rebels while he was trying to hide the gem. The government forces then arrived, making the commander unable to do anything about the diamond. Solomon was able to bury it and then was put to jail with all the other miners. The commander announced the existence of the diamond in the jail which doesn't escape the attention of David Archer, a smuggler who works for Van de Kaap and was arrested when he was trying to smuggle diamonds into Liberia. He arranges for Solomons freedom and then tries to persuade him to tell him the location of the elusive diamond, which he needs to obtain so that he could get out of Africa for the time being. David later on meets an American journalist by the name of Maddy Bowen. She is doing a story on the blood diamonds and insists on David's cooperation. He makes a deal with her to help him locate Solomon's family in exchange of information on the blood diamonds trade. Solomon later on discovers that his family is safe in a refugee camp but his son was taken by the rebel forces. They set off without Maddy Bowen, who was evacuated, to find Solomon's son and the pink diamond. Later on, they return to the mine where Solomon found the diamond. David reports the coordinates of the mine and sends in a chopper to wreck the place. They arrange to go in later when David finds that Solomon has…

In the Philippines, people power has always been a significant manifestation of pluralism because of the degree of consensus underlying the political process of transfer of power. First used in February 1986, this popular Filipino mass protest was aggravated by the late former president Ferdinand Marcos’ attempt to steal the results of the snap elections he called in order to validate his presumed…

In Mahathir’s speech about the Filipino-style democracy, I have to agree with what he had said; “When people think only of the freedoms of democracy and know nothing of the implied responsibilities, democracy will not bring the goodness that it promises. Instead it will result only in instability and instability will not permit development to take place and the people to enjoy the benefits of freedom and the rights that democracy promises”. We should not only look at the benefits we will get but we should be aware also in our duties. Everything should be balance so that we can attain our goals easily. I also agree with his statement that tells about how democracy works. He stated that it only happens when we know its limitations. Of course, not everything is unlimited. We have a number of rights to be name of but we should know its coverage. We should not abuse it rather use it wisely. Some government officials also become more corrupt because of freedom. When we elect him, He can enjoy a lot of benefits without giving too much effort. And because of that, he will do everything just to maintain his position or raise it higher. People should also be disciplined enough. Having democracy means having the freedom to rule yourself but, not all people can do that. Not all of us possess something that a leader should have. They think that when they have freedom, they have everything under their control so they use it abusively. For an instance, some people are rallying because they think that the government does not give concerns with their problems. They voted for them so they should not blame them for not being satisfied. They should know that they are not the only one suffering. The officials in return should be willing to serve his people. They should them first before themselves. However, I disagree that a doctor president is much better for Philippines. He may have those…

When our teacher told us that we will be watching a video about political government in the Philippines, I thought that it would be about politics only. But as the videos are playing, I realize that it was more than politics. It is an eye-opener not only for the government officials but also to all Filipinos. They made a documentation to open the eyes of the candidates for the election. It was made to let the government know the current condition of the Philippines with regards to the concern of the Filipinos.…
