CGE526 – PETROLEUM GEOLOGY

Geology

Geology is basically the science which is related to the study of the origin of the Earth including the history and its life, the materials that made it up, the structure of the materials and the processes acted upon them. It also deals with the study of the organisms that have inhabited the planet and the structure of a specific region of the Earth involving the rocks, soils, mountains, fossils and other features. The word geology was first known used in the year 1735 which is according to Modern Latin geologia “the study of the earth” where geo means earth and logia or logy denotes a subject of study or interest. In Medieval Latin, geologia was meant “study of earthly things” as it is distinguished from arts and sciences that concern of the works of the God. The word gē from geologia is originated from Greek which means earth whereas logia means study of or discourse.

Knowledge in geology gives insight into the history of the Earth formation and its structure by providing the primary evidence and theory related to plate tectonics, the evolutionary history of the living things and past climates. In recent times, geology is found to be commercially important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration or exploitation also for evaluating water resources. One of the well-known related disciplines to geology is economic geology which it is concerned regarding earth materials that can be used for economic and/or industrial purposes including precious and base metals, nonmetallic minerals, construction-grade stone, petroleum minerals, coal and water. Furthermore, economic geology also can be separated into petroleum geology and mining geology where these fields related to the exploration and exploitation of a specific and certain substances out of the surface of the earth. Petroleum engineering especially is the study of the origin, occurrence, movement, accumulation, and exploration of hydrocarbon fuels which refers to the

In the kingdom of energy, coal is gradually losing its position as the most used energy resource in the world. On the contrary, oil has become one of the most significant energy resources in people’s life. Meanwhile, researchers have found many other natural resources that can become substitutes of oil. Oil sands are one of these resources. “The oil sands are a thick, viscous mixture of bitumen hydrocarbons combined with water, sand, heavy metals and clay” (Alberta Canada, 2012). A great controversy between the economic and social benefits and environmental costs of oil sands has been developed for a long time. From a comprehensive perspective, the development of oil sands should be recommended and encouraged. It will benefit the…

Geology started out with the simple curiosity of the earth, its rocks, how and when they formed. “William Strata Smith first recognized in the early 1800s that the fossil record had systematically changed through time.” This lead scientists, namely geologists from all over the world to make divisions of geological time known as a relative time scale. In order to get a generalized date they placed rocks and fossils into eras and periods. With a relative time scale, scientists were able to work together to establish a timeline they could use to categorize the age in which the rock or fossils existed.…

It is also the study of organisms that have inhabited our planet. An important part of geology is the study of how Earths materials, structures, processes and organisms have changed over time. Fossils are linked to geology because, it is the study on how the world has build up over the years and fossils are animals and plants from over the years. They have changed over time because they have become smaller and form in different ways like freezing and volcanic eruptions. Over the years fossils have told us about life forms we had no idea about and is proved with the fossils or…
