Rationale of the Study

Radish is an annual herb widely grown for its edible fleshy, hot tasting roots maybe red, white or purple. Radish is a coarse annual crop plant. Roots are fleshy, pungent and variable in size and form. Leaves are roughly hairy, the lower ones lyrate. Flowers are variable, about 1.5 cm long, usually white or lilac, with purple veins sepals erect, lateral ones saccate at the base. (http://www.stuartxchane.org/Labanos.html) There are so many pests here in the world. Some people are tired of buying expensive pesticides, so the researcher think of something to lessen this problem, and that’s how the researcher came up to the study, “Pesticide from Radish Extract.” The researcher think of other uses of radish aside from it is edible and the researcher try to use it as pesticide. The researcher wants to contribute knowledge in maintaining the good health of vegetable plants using a pesticide out of radish extract. It maybe helpful in livelihood by producing good crops. The harvest can be sold to market as an additional income. It can also minimize the number of planters who used chemical which are found distractive to the environment. It is on the above premise that the researcher decided to on this study in order to help people have an access to an inexpensive alternative pesticide.

Objectives of the Study This study generally aims to determine the effectiveness of radish extract as pesticide in killing pests. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following: a.) What are the components of radish that can kill pests? b.) What is the amount of radish extract needed to kill pests? c.) What is the difference, if any, on

The increase in desire for perfect produce, drives the need for pesticides today. Much debate of the effects of chemicals used on commercial crops and overall long term effects on humans is an increasing concern. With the increase in advertising of organic produce, many standards of farming have been criticized. Many are claiming a large increase in risk to humans for consuming commercially grown produce, because of the chemicals used to manage such a large volume of crops. There have been many debates of the actual risk of pesticide consumption. With advancing technology and farm equipment, many types of chemical sprays and powders have been used. The actual effect of these pesticides and long term exposure can be harmful to human health.…

Another point about the negative effects of pesticides is that they harm animals and have some extreme impacts on their health and the survival of the species. In a journal on how the use of pesticides endangers wildlife and the environment, prominent author, investigative journalist, and science reporter Sonia Shah explains that seemingly benign levels of pesticides impair immune function in wildlife, leading to outbreaks of disease. In recent die-offs, millions of amphibians, bees, and bats died, decimating the populations (Shah, 1). Shah describes how it does not take an exorbitant amount of agrochemicals to harm an animal. When an animal’s immunity is compromised due to pesticide exposure, its body loses the ability to resist diseases,…

Plants are one of the most complex organisms; how they grow is very complex and it is important to see how they grow to even how they die. We first had to propose a question and test it to see if it was profound enough to test. Our group decided to see how different chemical substances affect radish plants, and which substance will kill the plant fastest. We planted 8 germinated radish seeds, then put ammonia in 2 of the plants, vinegar in 2 other plants, put both vinegar and ammonia in 2 other plants, and had the last 2 plants as our controls. We observed the plants in a period of 6 weeks, each week we added 1mL of each chemical to each of the plants and 30mL of water each week. We then recorded the data to help finalize a conclusion to our experiment. At the end of the experiment, it was concluded that the chemical ammonia kills radish plants faster than vinegar or both vinegar and ammonia together.…

Later in the book, Carson proposes primarily biological alternatives to the chemical pesticides currently in use. However, introducing a foreign species or biological component may be impractical for the agricultural industry. I suspect it’s more expensive than chemical sprays, and businesses, even food ones, generally care more about money than their environment.…

The people using these pesticides ignored other solutions, as demonstrated by the author, which in turn cause the audience to question the chemical companies’ capabilities and look to the environmentalist for answers. Carson later goes on to state that chemical companies are waging war against Mother Nature, using farmers to do their dirty work. She describes the farmers as puppets sent off to complete “their mission of death” for the companies’ “needless war.” During this time frame, America is taking part in the Vietnam War, thus the idea of war and the terror it brings is still fresh in the audience’s minds. This militaristic diction calls upon their feeling and puts emphasis on the amount of lives that suffer in such events, and for what? A war with no gain and many losses, such as the war in both Vietnam and nature’s front door. Carson evokes the audience’s anger and frustration linked to the current events and directs them towards the metaphorical war the chemical companies are waging in order to convince the public that pesticide use is but another dead end and should be stopped immediately. What might be even worse than the companies’ manipulative actions, however, is that the…

The above results show the data collected after a week of measuring the biggest plant per bag. Each day the biggest radish plant in site A was measured and by day five the largest plant was 5 centimeters long, and had developed small green leaves. By the 5th day site B and D’s seeds showed no signs of growing and length remained at 0 centimeters. Site C and D’s superior seed both grew a total of 3 centimeters according to the 5th day measurements. Both the graph and table display the same results. The plants were measured with a ruler and then written into the table.…

Tools such as herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides reduce crop losses both before and after harvest, and increase crop yields. A plentiful supply of fresh produce is vital for a healthy population. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate the health benefits of regularly eating a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables and consumers are increasingly aware of these benefits. Agricultural productivity is key to ensuring that this demand can be met at an affordable price; and crop protection products help increase productivity and usable crop yields (Turk, 2014).…
