PERSUASIVE SPEECH OUTLINE

TOPIC: WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE UP SMOKING

PROPOSITION: Give up smoking and you will save yourself and the others around you and live in a healthy environment.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES/PURPOSES:
I want to persuade my audience on how harmful smoking does to the body and giving up the habit is the right way to do because it will literally save their lives and the people around them and the environment as well.

SPEECH PLAN

ATTENTION STEP:
Opening statement: Smoking… What’s in it for you? We all know for a fact that smoking is dangerous to our health but still many people simply cannot get rid of the habit. According to a study conducted by the World Health Organization, 34 million Filipinos smoke. Majority of these smokers starts at a young age, which eventually develops into a habit that they carry on to their adulthood. (www.philcancer.org.ph)
Credibility: I for one, had been smoking on and off in my life since the age of 17. I started smoking out of curiosity and with peer pressure during my college days. College life has not been easy for me. Because of socialization, anxiety and depression I cling to the pleasure of smoking even though I know it can hurt my body.
Preview of main points: First of all, briefly, I will talk about the problem you can get from smoking – the harm it can give to the smoker, the non-smoker and the environment. Then, I will talk about some solutions to the problem and finally, I will tell you how you will benefit from giving up smoking.

NEED/PROBLEM STEP:
1. What does Cigarette/Tobacco smoking does to a smoker?
A. Cigarette contains chemicals that are harmful to smokers and non-smokers. Cigarette contains 4000 chemical compounds. These toxic ingredients in cigarette smoke travel throughout the body causing damages in several different ways. Cigarette smoke causes the lungs air passages to become worn away and unable to sweep foreign particles from the throat.
