Persuasive Speech On Type 1 Diabetes
Introduction: 2 years ago when I was 10 years old, I had lost ten pounds in only 2 weeks. I was exhausted, drained of all energy, sometimes I couldn't eat it made me so nauseous but sometimes I couldn't get enough food in me, I was always thirsty and I always craved sugar. After a week of this I was rushed to the hospital after I saw the doctor. While I was in the hospital I wasn't allowed to eat for 24 hours, I was starving. On the second day in the hospital I left the intensive care unit and went home, but for the next 2 weeks I had to go back to the hospital for training every other day. Now I have to test my blood glucose by pricking my finger to get some blood and than I insert it into a small machine 5-10 times a day and inject myself

This is the everyday life of people with diabetes. When you have diabetes you have to take a blood glucose monitor and some form of fast acting sugar like juice or candy wherever you go, this means you have to carry a bag big enough to fit this and everything else you carry or a Fanny pack. This may not seem like a big deal but if you forget those things you run the risk of having a low blood sugar which if it is not treated with enough carbohydrates can make you pass out and after an hour to five hours die. Also if you plan on eating or even if you don't plan on eating you might get hungry so most places you go you have to bring your insulin pen or syringe, many needles and a small sharps container to put the needles in afterwards. If you don't take the insulin and the glucose monitors with you but eat any carbohydrates unless your blood sugar is low you’re blood sugar will go high and than you will feel very sick. With diabetes also comes hours and hours of learning. You have to learn how to count carbohydrates which may seem simple but is actually quite hard, you have to learn how to use the insulin and the blood glucose monitors and you have to learn what diabetes actually is also you have to learn how to adjust your insulin, when to take it and you must learn how exercise effects you blood sugar. One of the things people find most difficult is the change in their diets, some people eat candy and junk food all day long, some people just like to snack on fruit but if you snack on anything that has carbohydrates in it, you can’t because you would then have to take insulin and during the first few months of having diabetes you are not allowed to take insulin unless it is during meal
