Intro: People of the middle class all know that the minimum wage of $7.25 is not sufficient to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. There is considerable evidence to show that the current generations comfortable lifestyles require a more luxurious price for standard living. The cost of living over the years has dramatically increased due to high consumer demands of products. As that being said, $7.25 is just not enough for a happy lifestyle, food, and the bills. There are many jobs that dislike or just can't afford paying high wages. Therefore, many employers hire less to save money. This causes a non-sufficient pay rate for comfortable living and high unemployment rates. The cabinets full of little to no food and small sized rooms full of multiple beds are what I see. The not so well put together houses in poor communities are full of kids and roommates. Living with cousins, aunts, and uncles are the norm here. We all have to share beds and one bathroom. Dinners are prepared every night as a necessity but other than that breakfast and lunch were to be eaten at school because it's hard to afford all that food for everyone at home. The struggles of just being able to pay the bills, buy shoes, and clothes are the issues that are rising in the middle class with the inflation and taxes.

Middle class families are defined more by their aspirations than their income.

Body: Body 1: (The cost of living over the years has dramatically increased due to high consumer demands of products. ) For many families in the middle class that's how life starts out; but later in life generations grow up to realize that they need to become part of the working middle class to provide a sufficient lifestyle. Now a days though, it's always about buying the trendiest thing, name brands, and getting a discount for EVERYTHING! Things like that cause for a higher demand of standard living. The social needs

The middle class is defined not by a class of people in the middle of a social hierarchy, but rather as a façade of the so-called “American dream.” New York based author and historian, Stuart Ewen, in his essay “Chosen People,” published in “Literacies” by W.W. Norton & Company Inc. in 1997 addresses the topic of the middle class and argues that social status and class are characterized by patterns of consumerism. Americans today ask themselves what the true “American dream” consists of and many face a harsh reality that this dream is not an easy lifestyle to live. Ewen and other authors, Ira Steward and Alan Dawley, go into detail focusing upon the true middle class lifestyle and how this dream becomes an unattainable goal for more Americans every year.…

Near the end of the 1800’s a middle class started to appear which separated the poor from the aristocrats. This made work less stressful on people because they were making enough money that they no longer needed to work twelve hours a day and they spent more time at home. The middle class didn’t work in factories they ran their own small businesses for examples merchants, lawyers, doctors, and teachers were all part of the middle class. The middle class opened the door for the lower class to work hard and earn a better life. In some cases people even managed to climb the mountain and join the aristocrats at the peak of classes. A better life also included the Reform Bill of 1832 which granted middle class men the ability to vote. The forming…

Intro =pathos =logos =ethos I would like to thank Mrs Diciaula for monitoring this debate and you guys for listening and asking questions. Your decisions are the best privilege that you have, the only privilege that matters in the United States is the privilege of making free decisions- we all have that privilege in a free country. Although it seems greedy, sometimes people need to see the benefits on the other side of the table before making important decisions, important decisions like applying for your first job. According to my poll, 60% of the our fellow classmates have jobs.…

For as long most people can remember, the middle class has been the economic majority in the United States. In Edward McClelland's article "RIP, the Middle Class: 1946-2013", McClelland argues the sooner than later, the middle class will be merely nonexistent and the economy will only consist of rich and poor. He casually explains to middle class American citizens what the past middle class looked like, how the middle class stands now, and some hardships that people of the recession experienced. Growing up in the 1970's, McClelland describes how someone didn't need to graduate high school to obtain a job that could support a family, but now, in the twenty-first century, even with a high school diploma and four years of college education, no well paying jobs are promised. In this article,…

During the first year of the economic recession as a result of the financial crisis, which some may argue it was close to an economic depression; about five million American lost their jobs (Adams, 2013). That alone was enough to widen the gap between the middle and high social classes. In addition to all that loss of income, the retirement accounts of working Americans lost great value. In the example, my retirement account lost sixty percent of its value like overnight, the value of my retirement money just evaporated before my eyes in less than a year. Moreover, the value of my home dropped like a rock due to the burst of the real estate bubble that resulted from that financial crisis, without mentioning the millions of Americans that lost their homes to foreclosures. Furthermore, the easy access to credit that the middle-class enjoyed for so many years was gone forever due to the credit crunch that resulted from the same financial crisis. In fewer words, after the financial crisis of 2008, middle-class Americans lost billions of dollars in wealth that have contributed to the widening of the financial gap between classes, thus increasing the conflict between classes that results in classism (Adams,…

All over the United States the rate of minimum wage workers being adult instead of teenagers is drastically increasing. “Since half of all minimum wage workers’ are adults, less can be said about with confidence about the effect of minimum wage on employment in low-wage industries” (Brown, Gilroy, and Cohen 524). To remain out of poverty, these adults take the lower income jobs so they can provide for themselves and their family. Some of the top successful low income businesses such as fast food and retail are the type of jobs these people take. Minimum wage is contributing to the increase of people with low income and unemployment because for unskilled workers it is harder to find jobs, so they take whatever job they can get. Increasing the minimum wage will benefit people with low income, benefit the economy, and benefit people pursuing a higher education.…
