Eating Together Think about the last dinner you ate. Were you alone or were you with your family? Did you sit down at the table or did you just grab it on the go? Some may say they simply don’t have time to sit as a family and eat all together, due to work, children’s sports or whatever the excuse may be. At least three times a week families should sit down together at the dinner table and eat as a unit.
Studies show families that eat healthy means together as opposed to picking up fast food helps maintain a routine and increase communication skills. More positive effects of eating as a family include decreasing the number of eating disorders, raising self esteem, lowering the risk of teen pregnancy, lowering the risk of depression and lowering the risk of drug abuse. Not only does it help your child in their future but it gives you a chance as a parents or older sibling to find out about the child’s day, how their grades are and if they need help or advice on anything. It give you a chance to take your part as a role model and guide them in making good decisions. Other positive effects eating together brings is higher goals in school, at the dinner table many things are talked about and this time gives you a chance to explain the importance of good grades. It is also a great time to persuade them to use their imagination and become anything in the word that they want, as long as they make the grades to go to school for it. Studies show that 40 percent of children who eat dinner with their family make A’s and B’s, have higher vocabulary and better attendance in school. If they hear about their elders going to work sick and when they don’t sleep good at night they’ll be motivated to do the same, they don’t want to look like a wimp in your eyes. If you just remind them that their grades and attendance are very important and that drugs and alcohol aren’t always the best path to take, they’ll keep that advice in their heads, weather they admit it or not. Giving children healthy food is just a part of encouraging children to eat healthily; there are other issues to be considered. We need to be aware of how much food a child needs over the course of a day. Too much food can cause a child to gain weight and too little food could cause a child to be undernourished. Portion control is important to ensure a child is having the correct amount of food. Showing parents a sample of a day’s food and working out the calorie content is a good way of seeing how much food children need rather than telling them how many calories they need.…

Children and young people throughout their lives will make choices such as whether to eat healthy or unhealthy or start smoking or drinking. An early years setting should encourage healthy snacks and encourage parents to supply healthy balanced lunchboxes. The setting should involve the children in activities and discussions about the importance of healthy living but there will come a point where the children can choose for themselves. If a child/young person chooses to eat unhealthily this will have a negative impact on their wellbeing, this could have a dramatic or not so effect on their health in later life. For example they could develop diabetes or become obese from choosing to continually eat an unhealthy diet, but in a less extreme scenario they could just have bad skin conditions (spotty…

According to an article in The New York Times titled Is the Family Dinner Overrated? Gray Matter points out how many studies have suggested that children who participate in family dinners tend to be “healthier, happier, do better in school and [will] engage in fewer risky behaviors…” (Matter). My grandparents masterfully orchestrate the discussions at the dinner table at each family gathering. When they are present, there is always a deep conversation, whether it is about the political environment in Mexico or family members who have long passed away. Ever since I was young, I have watched my family engage in conversations as I enviously dreamed about being old enough to partake in the discussions as well. As time passed, my cousins grew out of their position at the kid’s table and began engaging in the conversations at the adult’s table. During the gatherings, they now could sit down at the real dinner table and chat with the adults. From my seat at the small plastic play table, I watched jealously and glanced pitifully at the table where I was relegated to sit.…

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…
