Persuasive Speech
Specific purpose: to persuade the audience that secondhand smoke is harmful. Claim: Smoking should be banned from all public locations such as schools and hospitals, because of its danger to others. Do you know someone who smokes or do you smoke? Have you ever smoked in front of another person before or even worse a child? My interest in secondhand smoke arose when i was younger and my dad smoked. I was about 8 or 9 years old, however I lost interest until last semester when I researched a paper for English and discovered that secondhand smoke can be very deadly. Secondhand smoke is also known as environmental tobacco smoke. SHS “contains 250 toxic chemicals, including more than 50 that can cause cancer” (CDC). These chemicals include “arsenic, benzene, nickel, vinyl chloride (substance used on plastics)” (NCI). Health effects also arise from secondhand smoke. For children who are exposed it puts them at greater risk for such things as, Sudden infant death syndrome, asthma, middle ear infections and residuary problems. According to the Center for Disease Control exposure to …show more content…
I walk around campus a lot and I see signs everywhere saying no smoking 500ft form doorways, but people still do it and as a student walking by and inhaling the smoke everyday is not good. I feel like the schools and other public settings where others are involved should put a ban on smoking. I believe that for a smoker the choice is theirs and I shouldn’t have to suffer with them by just merely walking by. Secondhand smoke is clearly a threat to both non smoking adults and children, so I hope we can take more actions to protect them. I also hope this speech will make smokers more aware of their surroundings and who they will be

Many people debate over where government intervention is appropriate and personal freedom should begin. One of these highly discussed topics is banning smoking in public places. The ban of smoking in public has many advantages and reasons. Smoking in public puts innocent adults, teenagers, and children at risk of serious health problems. If smoking is banned in public, this may help lower rates of potential smokers and current smokers as well. The welfare of the nonsmoker and the smoker are both affected by allowing smoking in public. By banning smoking in these areas, the population would be positively influenced.…

Smoking cigarettes can cause lung problems. Both first-hand and second-hand smokers are affected by cigarette smoke. Scientific findings and researches show that the chemicals in cigarettes, apart from the smoke, can lead to health problems such as lung cancer. Smoking cigarettes should be banned in public places. In public places, more people, both young and old, can be exposed to the smoke from cigarettes. My position differs from those who might say that smoking altogether should not be banned. My position is that smoking in public places should be banned. It does not include smoking in private places like homes. Smoking in public places should be banned because it poses health risks to individuals who are non-smokers and who do not want to inhale the fumes from cigarettes. The risks are double to those who already have lung ailments.…

As explained by the American Academy of Otolaryngology, second hand smoke is composed of both smoke given off by a burning cigarette and that exhaled by a smoker. Second hand smoke is also called environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). The contaminants from EST consist of over 4,000 known chemicals, 43 of which are known carcinogens ("www.etnet.org," 2010). Furthermore, recent research by Stratford Health Department has revealed a new threat related to tobacco - “third-hand smoke.” The latter refers to the chemicals that are left behind over clothing, furniture, walls, and everywhere else tobacco smoke has come into contact with, including the smokers themselves. The chemicals found included arsenic, lead and nicotine, all of which can contaminate by the oral, skin and airway routes. ("Stratford star," 2013). It is clear that tobacco in all forms poses a threat to those who come in contact with it. In fact, a report by the Surgeon General (2007) concluded that there is no safe level of exposure to second hand smoke.…

The loss of my grandmother was the saddest day of my life. My grandmother never smoked a cigarette in her life. She died of heart disease in 1997. Ironically the heart disease was diagnosed as a result of secondhand smoke. My grandparents were married for over fifty years. Even now I still can hear my grandmother saying “Robert you need to put those cigarettes down before they kill you.” Robert, my grandfather, was a smoker for sixty years. My grandfather would answer back “Well we have to die from something.” After my grandmother died, my grandfather lived another twelve years and he died of a heart attack. Every smoker understands that smoking is harmful to their health. Do nonsmokers know the hazardous of secondhand smoke? The loss of my grandmother elevated my interest in the effects of secondhand smoke; which have become an epidemic in the United States. A study from the surgeon general says 126 million nonsmoking Americans are exposed to secondhand smoke each year (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2006, para 2). More than 49,000 nonsmokers die each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008, para 3).…

Smoking should be banned in all public places to protect people from second-hand smoke and stop promoting the visual to minors. The cigarette is a small but deadly habit enjoyed by 45.3 million Americans. Smoking is illegal inside most public restaurants and buildings as well as on school property. But, why should cigarette smoking be banned in all public spaces, including outside public establishments? The most obvious reason is second-hand smoke and the damage it causes to others who don 't want to be exposed to cigarette smoke. A ban on all public smoking would improve the air quality in each town, spare people from smoke exposure, decrease the overall amount of smoking, and make it less visible to children and teens as an accepted norm. The negative effects of second-hand smoke are scientifically documented and provide a valid reason for banning all public smoking.…

Today I am here to talk to you all about a problem that is far-reaching the nation. According to the National Cancer Institute. Each Year an estimate of 443,000 people die from smoking, but the damaging effects of smoking do not stop with the smoker. An estimated 88 million nonsmoking Americans, including 54% of children under the age of 12, are open to secondhand smoke and about 46,000 non-smoking Americans die from second hand smoke exposure a year. Over the past few years two of my uncles have had to have open-heart surgery in consequence to smoking most of their life. One of my uncles even got out of his bed, the day after having surgery, unhooked all of the chords and monitors off of him, and walked outside to smoke. Let me tell you the nurses were not too happy with him that day. If that doesn’t say smoking is a bad habit and addiction then I don’t know what does. I am credible to speak on this topic because I have seen the impact that smoking has had on my uncles health and a few other family members health and because of the extensive research that I have done. I have decided to talk to you all about banning smoking in public places because I want to make you aware of the dangers that it can cause. I hope that after my presentation you will have a good idea of how smoking is just a bad habit, nothing more and nothing less and is not only harmful to the smoker but to everyone around them. I will start off by talking about the effects smoking has on the heart, then I will talk about how it can cause unborn babies to have problems when they are born, and I will finish by talking about the effects it has on nonsmokers.…

Smoking tobacco is a destructive addiction. Not only is it harmful to your body, smoking in public in public is detrimental to society. Smoking one cigarette reduces your life by about 10 minutes and can cause lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses. Not only is harm done to the actual smoker, but innocent bystanders are affected. Bans against smoking were started to protect others against the effects of secondhand smoke. Prohibiting smoking in public outdoor places will also shield young children from seeing smoking as a common adult behavior to be emulated. Banning smoking in public places isn’t just a question of taking away one group’s freedom for the benefit of another; it is something that is in the interest of people as a whole. It comes down to a decision between the healths of a whole nation versus the freedom of a minority. By allowing smoking in public places it is the freedom of non-smokers that is being restricted. We choose not to smoke but by going out into a public space such as a bar, restaurant, and also the park, which cause pollution of the air such as tar, nitrogen dioxide, particles and black smoke. It also causes destruction to our children because they tend to copy what they observe from us.…
