Pit Bulls are commonly recognized as wild, vicious and inherently dangerous animals, which is false. “Singling out a particular breed or type of dog has repeatedly been proven to be ineffective because breed alone is not predictive of whether a dog may pose a danger” (The HSUS). How can you look at any given dog or certain breed of dog and know whether it is dangerous, just by the way it looks? The answer to that question is, you can’t.…

The American Staffordshire Terrier (also known as Pit Bull) is believed to be a man-eating beast. But is this breed all it's made out to be? The Pit Bull started in the Unites States; it has been developed since the early 1800's as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Although the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the development of the American Staffordshire Terrier is the story of a truly American breed. This type of dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed this country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead, and general companionship. A number of the early ancestors were also developed for…

Few dogs are as renowned and as feared in America as the Pit Bull. The American Pit Bull Terrier is the product of interbreeding between Old English Terrier and English Bulldogs to produce a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog. These dogs were initially bred in England, and arrived in the United States with the founders. In the U.S., these dogs were used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, to drive livestock, and as family companions. Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess. The United Kennel Club (UKC) was the first registry to recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier, in 1898. It can be challenging not to…

Considered to be aggressive, and with jaws that lock without release until the victim is tired of fighting or dies from blood loss, it would seem that pit bulls are bred for combat. In fact, it may appear as such because pit bulls were bred to “bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head” (“Pit Bull”). As a result, breeding an animal like this drew people who enjoyed watching animal fights, which eventually gave the misconception that pit bulls are a dangerous breed. This misconception, along with irresponsible owners who didn’t socialize their dogs properly and/or wanted a dog that had a tough look, resulted in pit bulls becoming victims of the media, which portrays the dogs as vicious monsters that have one mission: to kill. The media releases stories of pit bull attacks on a seemingly bias basis, which has destroyed the dog’s original reputation as a family dog.…
