Homeschooling: Light Fires
Annie Sullivan, the legendary teacher of Helen Keller, said, “Children require guidance and sympathy far more than instruction.” Unfortunately, this statement never crosses the mind of a single member of many school districts. The people running schools often care about money and getting children’s education over with, rather than making sure that they have a good education and grow up with values. However, an alternative exists. For many different reasons, parents turn to homeschooling. Though homeschooling requires work, it is a beneficial choice for education.
Firstly, home schooling benefits a student because for many students when working at home fewer distractions arise. In a school environment with many other classmates, distractions become excessive and prevalent. To illustrate, at school, other students distract and keep children from staying focused and completing the work required of them. In non-homeschools, children are judged by what they wear and how they look. This kind of peer pressure harms children. For instance, sometimes children become so overwhelmed with trying to conform and fit in that they either lose their true personality or they become outcasts. Such behavior cannot do anything but damage a child’s spirit. Furthermore, homeschooling does not completely shelter children from the world as many people think. For example, homeschoolers do have friends, but when children live in an environment where their peers do not constantly pressure them, it becomes much easier to resist. In other types of schooling, children live in this pressure every day, but homeschoolers can stand firm in their beliefs and still live in the world.
