Have you ever been angry or upset while petting or being around a cat? Probably not right? Maybe there’s a reason behind why you feel good around cats. What are the benefits of owning a cat, both long term and short term. I’ve experienced somehow feeling happier around my cats then when I’m not with them. Cats are soft which maybe humans find comforting that makes us feel good or could it have something to do with hormones.
My original assumptions are that cats are very beneficial for stress because I’ve heard people talk about it, but what about them makes our stress disappear. To find out someone else’s opinion, I interviewed Stacey Dastis, an author and blogger who is almost as big of a cat fan as I am. I learned a lot from my interview. She has two cats who require more patting than usual, however this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Stacey didn’t know much on why she feels calm and relaxed but she was aware of how she felt around them. She told me about how her cats comfort her and make her feel safe, and that they are good for people with depression. She had a cat growing up which is how she knew a lot of information about this topic and really helped me with my research. For my own my research I went online. I found that petting cats can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels long term which improves cardiovascular function all while releasing endorphins in our bodies. Not only do cats just make us feel good but in a way they help us live longer and healthier. Also, that people with pets tend to be less depressed and lonely. Physical contact with cats leads to the body making oxytocin- a distressing hormone. Cat owners have a reduced chance of dying from a stroke or heart disease. Cats provide an attachment and a purpose for someone who is feeling depressed or even
