BIBLICAL SEPARATION

Out of the many things that we are to separate from as Christians there are some that we should just really stay away from, gambling being one of them. Now many people would ask why gambling? What makes it so important, its just a past time or something fun to do and maybe make a little money in the process. Well the truth is that Gambling is wicked and leads to nothing good! It effects and destroys pretty much anyone and everyone associated with it. One of the things that it does it goes against Gods plan for making and earning money. In II Thessalonians 3:10 it says “For even when we were with

There are several verses in the Bible that speak of profits here are a few of them. 2 Corinthians 9:6 - But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 1 Timothy 6:10 - For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Hebrews 13:17- Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.…

In the beginning of Christianity at about 70-80 CE, they had a very negative approach toward merchants (Doc. 1). Christianity's shift from a negative view to a positive view is a demonstrated in documents 1, 3, 4, and 6. Document 1 states that no rich man can enter the kingdom of heaven. This is indirectly stating that merchants cheat people and it's not a worthy profession. The author specifically enforces this statement by saying that hypothetically, it is easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of god. This document also demonstrated bias because it shows the strong dislike for merchants. The author's point of view in this document is evident that merchants were not appreciated nor did they have any value in the society. In contrast, document 3 describes the life of a Christian monk in 1170 and how he brought goods for cheap prices in lands where there was less demand for them and went to places where there was more demand and sold it for a much higher price, thus making a very lucrative profit. This document I different from document 1 because of merchants and trade. Document 3 changes from not allowing merchants in heaven into saying that…

Wayne Grudem wrote the book ‘Business for the Glory of God,’ this book is based on biblical teachings. The book discusses issues such as ownership, productivity, employment, commercial transactions, profit, money, inequality of possessions, competition, borrowing and lending, attitudes of heart and effect on world poverty from a biblical standpoint, each are “fundamentally good and provides many opportunities for glorifying God but also many temptations to sin.” (Grudem, 2003, p. 19) Grudem claims that business can glorify God. He states “I am going to argue that many aspects of business activity are morally good in themselves, and that in themselves they bring glory to God—though they also have great potential for misuse and wrongdoing.” (Grudem, 2003, p. 12) He consistently defends the use of private property, profit and competition for the moral good as opposed to the moral neutral or evil. In each chapter he shows not only how business can be used to glorify God, but how it could also be misused and become sinful.…

During the early years of Christianity, trade was not viewed in a positive way, but it was more considered like an obstacle that would stand and block the bridge linking a person to heaven. In fact as we can see Document 1 states that being wealthy would place you further away from God and consequently, further away from God's kingdom. "...a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." Being wealthy was thought of negatively by the New Testament, possibly meaning that earning a lower income would draw you nearer to God.…

Christianity's distaste for merchants and trade is displayed in an excerpt from the Christian Bible,New Testament (Matthew) where the author talks about how being wealthy makes it difficult to enter the kingdom of God (Doc 1). The document itself seems to be trustworthy since the Bible is Christianity's first book and was written by Christianity's earliest followers to simply tell the stories of the Christian faith (which shows no real ulterior motive). The mention of eternal life intensifies Christianity's negative attitude towards merchants. This is because merchants tended to be wealthy and if being a merchant jeopardized eternal life in heaven, Christianity would definitely see merchants and trade as bad. In The Life of St. Godric Reginald monk of Durham talks about how 12th century St. Godric was once a wealthy merchant but then abandoned that life (giving all of possessions to the poor) to become a hermit and follow God (Doc 3). Although the document itself may not be very trustworthy considering the author was a colleague to St. Godric and may portray him in a better light, it does state the initial attitudes Christians had…

According to Lamar E. Cooper Sr, "The Bible teaches that we are to live by our own work, not by the exploitation of others." He also states that, "Gambling is not an investment in anything; it is a simple win/lose proposition in which the winner takes all and the loser forfeits all." If commercial casinos are legalized in Ohio, the 11 proposed sites for land- based casinos would generate an estimated 610 million in tax revenue on winnings, of the estimated 610 million received in taxed revenue, some will go towards rehabilitation and education for problem gamblers. Contrary to Cooper, gambling is an investment were the loser ends up winning in the long run through education and rehabilitation and also the winner doesn't take all because their winnings will be taxed. Also by legalizing commercial casinos we will be living by our own work, because the proposed 11 casinos would create an additional 85,000 jobs in Ohio which in turn means more revenue going to the state of Ohio through income taxes. Also giving the workers the opportunity to spend money they worked for, within our states casinos instead of going out of state to…

I work in a supply and demand field. Every day I use my company credit card to purchase products and parts for our company. I also make sure the contracts we purchase are done right and no one is being cheated out of their money. I would have to say that this is one example of how this belief that mankind is created in the image of God affects me. I do not believe in cheated people out of their money and I am a very honest person. Since I do work for the military buying products I constantly get phone calls from vendors wanting me to purchase their products. Sometimes I have to turn my phone off because there are people out there just trying to make a quick sell and the product is not good. The Bible states “Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. "It is written," he said to them," 'My house will be called a house of prayer, ' but you are making it a 'den of robbers. ' " (Matthew 21: 12-13) There are times where I do feel like its chaos and it’s all about money and greed. Working with money and finances can be chaos and that’s when you put your faith in God and pray.…

American society has been greatly corrupted in the past fifty years. America has had a total of four Great Awakenings and the most recent one occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. During this time period, people started becoming very spiritual and returned to church. In the current society we are living in more than seventy percent of people will claim to be religious or at least believe in God. While many Americans claim this, how true can this statement be, if in some cases other circumstances come before the all mighty father. Exodus 20:3 states “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” While a person may not have other gods they care for an event with more attention. These people demonstrate that they have a greater value that over powers everything including the Church of God. Some people treat this value with much more importance while church is slid into second place. This great value is called football and the Super Bowl. American values demonstrate how corrupted they have become when a congregation is willing to reschedule the instillation of a new minister to watch the Super Bowl. By taking these actions it is acceptable to criticize society by stating American society has become corrupt, questioning the order in which people place God and sports.…
