By most definitions, if we are persuaded by an individual, we are said to be obedient to that individual. If we are persuaded by a group, we are said to have conformed to that group’s objectives. Compare and contrast the core differences between these two concepts. In what ways do group and individual persuasion techniques differ? As social beings, why are we naturally prone to conformity and obedience?…
Everywhere you look in the world today, there is always someone trying to persuade you to do something. While watching the television every commercial is sixty seconds of pure persuasion. You can read them in the newspaper. Even while driving on the interstate there are huge billboards that grab your attention to whatever they are advertising. People literally knock on your door trying to persuade you to switch to their religion. The goal of the persuasion is mutual, but the persuasions techniques may differ. The techniques that one uses can depend on many things. For example, the technique a speaker chooses, might depend on your audience or the occasion. In Jonathan Edwards “Sinners in the hands of an Angry God”, Edwards uses three main persuasive techniques which are, connections to reality, his vivid description, and fear of the unknown.…

I believe that both teenagers could have been easily persuaded by a group of their peers. Although, Donnie did not have as many friends as John, I felt that because of John’s popularity it crippled him to becoming the one most likely to be persuaded by peer pressure. John is a confident person and once he is in his confront zone he can do whatever it is that he wants to do, but since he had just started the University he was needing to be befriend; which tells me that he would result to drinking, using drugs or skipping class just to fit in.…
While the first amendment calls for separation of church and state religion is ingrained in American culture; from its earliest beginnings to modern day religion has been used as a tool for persuasion. One of the best uses of religion for persuasion was “ A discourse concerning unlimited submission and non-resistance to the higher powers with some reflections made on the resistant made to King Charles I and the anniversary of his death” a sermon by John Mayhew which used religion as a tool to sow the seeds of American…
There are many dangers that plague us in today’s society. One of the most pressing issues is that of driving under the influence of alcohol. This is a problem for many reasons. Firstly, driving while intoxicated is illegal. It shows the rising problem of substance abuse, and most importantly, driving drunk is deadly. Persuasion is "the process by which a person's attitudes or behaviors are, without duress, influenced by communications from other people (Encyclopedia Britannica Online). There are numerous types of persuasion and in many forms. In the following pages I will take you on a journey through the tactics of sweepstakes companies, one in particular - Publishers Clearing House. This is an interesting subject matter that I have grown up around. My mother has sent in each and every Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes letter she has received since she was twenty years old. She is positive that someday she will indeed win big money even though she has only won a few prizes worth about a dollar in over 30 years of doing it. Why? Simply because she is persuaded by someone or something to keep doing so.…

In the early 1960s, psychologists in the United States interviewed several U.S. soldiers and American Prisoners of War returning home from combat against North Korea. Their main focus in particular were on those who had suffered an extreme change in their personality. These young soldiers had experienced being brainwashed under the communists. Psychologist have later realized that people involved in cults may have experienced similar psychological changes. Cult leaders use the same structure known as, mind control or mind reform. The book "Combating Cult Mind Control", by Steven Hassen explains that mind control is more refined than brainwashing. Cult members are considered to be a good friend and righteous people. As a result, the person being indoctrinated offers less defiance and contention than if they being forcefully coerced. Through compliance with the process of mind reform, the victim slowly begins to surrender over his personality and accept the doctrines of the cult as biblical truth. Mind control does not involve physical abuse but it is limited to certain hypnotic processes to create a compelling effect of precepts (Cephas, 2010). Many of the individuals who are deceived are not just naive people, but they are often successful educated people.…
Persuasive thinking is the thought process that is trying to influence someone to accept a message (Kirby & Goodpastor, 2007). This type of thinking is extremely too difficult to master, but when done well can be very effective. The main points to consider when using this type of thinking an individual must understand; human nature, emotions, and think carefully before attempting to get someone to accept a message. An individual must also be aware of the time and the place the message is being communicated, and understands his or her involvement in the message it’s self. Most important, the message being conveyed must be understood, the audience, and the audiences’ values. A thinker that can understand all of these complex pieces of persuasive thinking will be successful at getting the people they are attempting to persuade to accept his or her message.…

A person’s thoughts, behaviors and emotions will be manipulated once they have joined a cult; the dangers of cults have become severe over the past years and have caused thousands of deaths due to the influence of cults members and leaders. Cults are able to gain members, due the fact that people in actuality do not know it is a cult they are joining. After joining a cult, some people still do not even understand that they are actually in a cult. Cults are something a person may read about or see on TV, but to have the actuality of knowing that a person has joined a group is shocking. It is something that an individual would think, that could not happen to them. Over the past decades there have been several horrific events that have caused deaths to hundreds of Americans. The causes of their deaths were the effects of their leaders, who the followers once trusted.…
