Lessons Learned from Managing a Personal Stock Portfolio

This report is going to talk about every aspect of the stock market game that I recently finished participating in with this Intro to Business class. It will state the good and bad times I experienced doing this project, my most and least successful trades, the challenging and easy activities that went along with this project, improvements, and most importantly, what I learned from taking part in this game.

First of all, I would like to talk about the good trades, the bad trades, and the trades that were just a waste of making.

The greater part of my stock portfolio was made up of technology stocks, which actually, I regret now. The majority of these stocks went way down towards

Safeway Inc., and Wal-Mart Stores.

On the other hand, my consumer-good type stocks did the best overall. They provided me with a reasonably good profit. One example is Coca Cola Co. which gave me a 21% rate of return. I think that's pretty darn good!

The one stock that I am definitely glad I invested in is Sony Corp. I invested in this stock mainly because it had a steady stock chart, and I figured it would give me a fairly reasonable profit, but boy was I surprised when I found that at the end of the game, I had an 18% profit. This was actually just a lucky trade I made, and the fact that I didn't sell it when it went down a little bit helped quite a bit Pixar is another example of a lucky trade, which provided me with a 24% rate of return!

There were a few stocks that were just a waste of investing in, because they didn't provide me with neither a high gain, nor loss. An example of this would be Quicksilver, which I held on to for approximately eight days, and in all that time, gave me a five cent

That experience makes you feel like the smartest person in the world, and gives you the confidence that you can succeed in investing.

To the contrary, it isn't the greatest thing to find that one of your stocks has gone down 10% in one day. When that happens, you ask yourself what did I do wrong¡¨, and you question your strategies. Thankfully, that didn't happen a whole lot for me in this project.

There are a few improvements that I would like to suggest to make this project a little better. One thing is to give the students a little bit more time in class to go on the computers and invest. It gives them a chance to discuss with their friends how they're doing, helpful tips, and compare their portfolios. One thing that could be eliminated is the need to print out the profiles of every single company you invest in. I feel that this is maybe a waste of paper, because of the fact that we never looked at them in class, or really did anything with them. I think it would be a whole lot easier, and more conservative, to just go to the company's profile online if you needed to see it. Those are the only things I see that could be

Warren Buffet, known as one of the most successful investors in history, is convinced that stock markets are inefficient. ' 'I think it 's fascinating how the ruling orthodoxy can cause a lot of people to think the earth is flat. Investing in a market where people believe in efficiency is like playing bridge with someone who has been told it doesn 't do any good to look at the cards ' ' (Buffet, 1984, as cited by Davis, 1990, p.4).…

It has been an interesting journey with the stock market these last couple months. This is my first experience ever in contact with stock market and of course studying and understanding it. Honestly, I still feel like an “idiot” in that market but “less idiot” than before. When I picked the stocks to study I tried to pick firms I knew tech, or contractors without even doing a study on them. I had no idea that Apple was going down since September 2012 (well it’s starting to rise again). I didn’t pay attention that my portfolio was heavy on tech companies and I head no clue that it might be smart to invest even in “bad” companies. Well, I didn’t learn something and here are some of my findings.…

In the stock market game, the whole class learned about the importance of analyzing stocks before buying. For me, the ultimate result of the game did not please me, but I did learn some things about the market. If we were to play another game for a short period of time, my strategy would certainly change. Using my experience, I would purchase precious metals. Precious metals constantly change price, and these constant changes guarantee high variability and chances to jump to the top. For example, the stock SIVR had over five peaks in period of two months. Other precious metal stocks have had similar patterns. Furthermore, the price of these stocks almost always bounce back to the original purchase price during the short period, so these stocks are relatively safe investments in the short term. As long as I do not become too greedy, precious metals provide a way to make quick money.…

Coming into this project, I was not really sure how the stock market worked. When I first invested into stocks, I did not know the philosophy of “buy low and sell high.” I thought the complete opposite, so when I bought shares of particular stocks, I bought them when they were high. So I basically started out my project with a big failure. As I was choosing which stocks to invest in, I looked at their six month history on a chart.…

Investing in stocks can be a great risk, often leading to profits or mistakes. Before buying the stocks, I thought of what companies are doing well in the market, which includes demand of their products by consumers. For instance, I bought stocks from Tim Horton 's and Air Canada, as I realized that consumers always have a demand for fast food products and travelling for various purposes throughout the year. It 's often a better choice to buy various different stocks that may not all be profitable, such as a food company, a retail company, and an insurance company, as you diversify your stock portfolio and instead of expecting only profits or only losses in your stock, you can balance them out (Roseman 1). The diversified portfolio theory helps one make a good investment, while expecting less losses, since there is more variety in your stocks, and so, some stock prices may increase, while some may decrease. This is a better investment as you may gain profits, or may balance your profits with your losses, and minimize the chances of losses when investing your money. A theory, such as the backup theory can also prove why diversification in stocks is important. I invested in stocks such as the oil sands, telecommunication services, retail, food market, and the hardware stores to have investments in various different fields or industries, so that if one industry is in loss, I can rely on another industry doing well (Hulbert 1). To make a good investment in stocks, one must also have realistic expectations of a company 's profit, and not only expect profits. Before purchasing the Telus stock, I realized that the company had fluctuations in their dividend as sometimes the dividend would increase, yet sometimes it would fall. As an investor, it 's better to look at the whole picture and understand that prices will fluctuate, but holding on to the stock for a longer period of time may also increase…

In my second round, I decided that my strategy was fine, that the devil was in the implementation, so I started to change how I distributed my investments. Then the market sentiment changed, my innovative product suddenly was over-delivering and I couldn’t lower the price because the cost of all these features I have just been investing in was too high. So I lost a lot of money and got fired. Again. It wasn’t looking good.…

The six stocks that I used to create my portfolio included Altera Corporation, Cabot Oil & Gas Corp., Dominion Resources, FMC Corporation, Chevron Corporation, and Nike Inc. Each of my stocks had weights, which I distributed for my $100,000. 20% of the $100,000 went towards Altera Corp., 15% to Cabot Oil $ Gas Corp., Dominion Resources, and Nike Inc. Finally I allocated 10% towards FMC Corp. and 25% towards Chevron Corporation. The stocks that I chose were intended to make my portfolio as diversified as possible so that I could receive high returns. I found that Dominion (D) Resources was the most steady and reliable investment from the six stocks in the portfolio. Altera (ALTR) was the one of the smaller investments with the smallest daily returns out of the six stocks, it performed consistently, however, was the only stock in the portfolio that finished the time period with a smaller daily return compared to a year prior (3/1/12).…
