Personal statement to clinical psychology
A. Personal background/Consideration reasons for studying clinical psychology
I would describe myself as a determined, logical, independent and adaptive person who is friendly, open minded and empathetic.
Born in Fujian, China and separated from parents since I was very young has made me mature and independent since early age. I came to Hong Kong at the age of nine. Though I moved to a new city where the spoken language is not my native tongue, I managed to learn Cantonese in a few months time and entered into a well-known local secondary school through hard work and determination. During my secondary school years, I continued to thrive academically and achieved good results in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination. I was accepted to the Chinese University of Hong Kong through the Early Admission Scheme and chose to major in Psychology.
I am a person with determination, prudence and resilience. Once a decision is made, I work hard to achieve the target. I received first honours in my undergraduate and joined Deloitte, an international accounting firm, after graduation. Shortly upon joining, I managed to catch up with the needed accounting knowledge and obtained the certified public accountant (“CPA”) qualification, I was highly recognized in my job.
After years of work and training in Deloitte and becoming a CPA, I have attained certain achievements in the field. That being said, I have always yearned to rekindle my passion for psychology and take a step forward in studying clinical psychology. Being a CPA provides me a secure life with stable income, but at the same time, I am aware of the fact that if I dwell in my current job, I will never be able to pursue my true aspirations.
Last year, I decided to take a short break in Australia to explore what I should further pursue. During this time of self-discovery, I received the unfortunate news of my mother’s cancer recurrence after 4 years of cancer remission. It came as a shock and I

    The Way We See Me

The way I see myself definitely varies from one degree to another. For instance, I am not at all tactful as I am imaginative. This is another reason why I perceive myself as being slightly quiet. I chose these answers because I know that I like to think a lot to myself and am more observant of others around me than I am of myself. Since I am rather quiet, I haven’t really practiced my communication skills as much as I’d like and thus why I am not very tactful. On a more positive note, I do see myself as extremely imaginative and friendly. I chose to rank myself high on these two because I always try to treat others the way I would want to be treated and was always told that I was extremely curious, imaginative, and artistic as a child. I believe I still am.…

In module 1A, I learned about the history of psychology, psychological perspectives, careers in psychology, and ethics. At the start of the idea of psychology Wilhelm Wundt became the “father of psychology”. Different approaches and perspectives became as a variety of people began to study psychology, such as Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytical perspective, Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow’s psychological perspective, and so on. I also learned about the diverse careers in the psychology field. There are clinical and counseling psychologists which diagnose and treat people with things such as depression, and there are sports psychologists to help athletes keep their heads in the game. In the last…

My mother never lost her hair. I never spent nights stroking her back as she got sick in the toilet, or watched as she grew pale and lost weight. Yet, I will also never get to see her triumph over cancer, never get to celebrate five cancer-free years and finally start to hope that she is finally better. The word ‘remission’ isn’t in my family’s vocabulary. Instead, there is only the knowledge that one day my mother will cease to be with us, and that the reason is because of the insidious, vile, reprehensible cancer that quietly crept from her breasts to her bones. In August of 2013, my mother was diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer, and it marked the moment I became an adult.…

I see myself as someone who is expressive. I am an outgoing girl and I find making friends to be a simple task. However, I am one of those people who will not fully open up to you unless I know I am comfortable. I am an open book, as long as the person reading me takes it one page at a time and doesn't jump chapters. I believe that I am this was because of how I grew up. I learned early on that you can't trust everyone you know, and you can't keep toxic people around. Day in and day out at school, I always tried to fit the mold of the stereotypical highschool student. Timid and shy, but more than willing to fit in with everyone else. Finally as a senior I have realized it is more important to be seen as yourself than as a copy of everyone else…

I think there are many words to describe my personality. I range from being the nicest kid in the world to be the biggest brat in the world. Some of the few opinions I have heard about myself from others are sweet, trustworthy, smart, friendly and shy but I have my own views about myself. My life has been a lot interesting as I come from three different places and cultures. Looking back on a childhood filled with events and memories, I find it rather difficult to pick on that leaves me with the fabled "warm and fuzzy feelings."…
