Personal Statement For Tatnall
I believe Tatnall is a great choice for me because of its mission. The mission is to provide students with an excellent college preparatory education in a family atmosphere. Family is a major attribute of the school. I am drawn to family as well. I believe that the feeling of family and the support of family is a key to success that I would like to use. Regarding diversity, the mission further states that “each graduate will be prepared to succeed as a college or university student and to assume the important role of a responsible member of society in all its diversity." This is astonishing. Today, people are judged like books; by the cover rather than what’s inside. So, I believe I can be a part of what is “inside the book”, and look at others

    Community and diversity are two of the most prominent factors colleges and universities use to attract students. At Temple University, it is easy to see that the school tries hard to implement these words into our heads whether it be succeeding or failing in reality.     Growing up Iranian American, I was greatly impacted by the opinions of my peers early on. Classmates would criticize my lunch or convey evident shock at the fact that I was Muslim, so I grew up feeling patronized for much of my early life. Eventually, I began surrounding myself with others who were also in my shoes, facing the discrimination that came along with being different.     When I got to the age I could start school, I was excited. I started school like any other kids my age did. Kindergarten through first grade were fun for me.     My first exposure to occupational therapy came while I was working as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist with a young girl with apraxia. Her speech problems had been linked to a lack of core strength, and we were to begin implementing an exercise routine to increase her strength. To achieve this goal in an enjoyable yet effective way for the child, an occupational therapist was consulted and began teaching us methods that incorporated preferred play activities into her core strengthening program. Running this new program became the highlight of our sessions, for both me and her it seemed. The smiles and giggles had me enjoying my job on a greater level; it was not only entertaining for the child, but a delight for me to implement. It was then I became extremely intrigued about the OT profession, and decided to explore the options the field had to offer. Research and curiosity eventually landed me on various websites and talking to those in the field, gaining knowledge about the different types of therapies and types of needs targeted by occupational therapists. The part that struck me most after all my research: OT is about daily life. It is about the activities that occupy our time, the small obstacles most people tackle each day with ease, obliviously unaware of the magnitude of importance these tiniest of accomplishments can truly encompass. The little everyday challenges in life are often the ones most overlooked, but to those unable or learning to conquer these challenges, their importance is evident. To me, these daily obstacles seemed like the most essential to overcome, small successes that could greatly improve an individual’s quality of life.…

    When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing.
