Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility, to me, means that we as individuals are responsible for our own actions. We begin learning this as children. As children, we are taught the difference between right and wrong, and when we make the conscious decision to do something wrong, we have to face the consequences. We are also taught that when you do the right thing, you are usually rewarded. The ideal situation is that we would learn not to do those things again that caused us to be punished. The knowledge we take from these experiences carry over into adulthood. Even though sometimes things happen in life which is beyond our control, we are ultimately responsible for pursuing the outcomes we want. We are responsible for ourselves, thus we are responsible for our actions. Owning up to this responsibility will help us in the long run. Looking up the definition of personal responsibility is impossible. One would have to look up the definition of the two individual words, personal and responsibility. The definition of personal is: “of, pertaining to, or coming as from a particular person; individual; private. Relating to, directed to or intended for a particular person” (“personal,” n.d.) . The definition of responsibility is: “being accountable, as for something that’s in one’s power, control or management; involving accountability, having a capacity for moral decisions and therefore accountable” (“responsibility,” n.d.). Putting these two definitions, one could very well come out with a good understanding of what personal responsibility means. My personal definition is an individual being responsible for their own actions. We are taught as toddlers about the difference between right and wrong. As a child, when we would put items in our mouth, we would be punished. If we cleaned up after ourselves, we would be rewarded. This positive reinforcement carries on throughout our lives. Learning that we are responsible for the choices we make as well as the values we are

(Introduction) According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary personal means relating to the person or body and responsibility means the quality or state of being responsible such as a moral, legal, or mental accountability. Fritz Perls, the father of gestalt therapy, said that, “responsibility meant that we all have the ability to personally respond – “response-ability”. Perls also referred responsibility to the ability to move, feel, live, and change you. So, to my understanding, personal responsibility is one’s ability to care for what has been entrusted to them. It is when an individual accepts the outcome of whatever actions or decisions he/or she makes, instead of blaming other people for what did not turn out right. Personal Responsibility is important to me because it is something that I am supposed to have as a child of the Most High God. In this essay, it is my goal to define what personal responsibility is and what it means to me, explain the relationship between personal responsibility and college success, and give an example of how I plan to practice personal responsibility in my education.…

Personal responsibility is to have respect for themself and others around us. Responsibilities are where we take care of what needs done. Either in our personal lives, work, and in school. We as adults are responsible to take care of what needs done for each task that we take on for that day. If we are not responsible for what we do, we will not get what needs accomplished for that day. Responsible also means that we take account for our actions, no matter how big or how small the problem may be, and facing the consequences, results, and the outcome that your actions create. When people hear the word “responsibility,” they do not truly realize that it is easier than they think, and it comes naturally. “The power behind taking responsibility for your actions lies in putting an end to negative thought patterns. You no longer dwell on what went wrong or focus on whom you are going to blame. You don't waste time building roadblocks to your success. Instead, you are set free and can now focus on succeeding.” ― Lorii Myers…

What does personal responsibility mean? To me personal responsibility means that I am responsible for what I choose in life. I have to hold myself accountable and cannot blame others for the choices I make. Jake Lawson wrote on the Livestrong.com website, “Accepting personal responsibility includes but is not limited to: acknowledging that you are solely responsible for the choices in your life and accepting that you are responsible for what you choose to feel or think” (Lawson, 2011). That statement is very profound and powerful. It is easy to place the blame on others but all that really does is hold us back from finding our true potential. We cannot use scapegoats to hide the fact that we possibly make bad decisions in life. Whichever direction my life heads, I am the captain of this ship and I cannot let others control what I do. I have control over my emotional responses to outside interference and must live with the consequences of my actions. In the Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 89 (Issue 4), 497-515, Dana Klein wrote ‘people are responsible when they act with the ability to do the right thing for the right reasons, or a good thing for good reasons.’(Klein, pg. 497) What exactly does that mean? It means that if we choose not to do the right thing or make bad decisions, they have not shown personal responsibility. I have to be willing to improve myself professionally, academically and personally in life. I can never be complacent or else I will never accomplish more and…

Personal responsibility to me is acknowledging responsibility for actions and decisions made, accepting the consequences that may follow from them, and understanding that others around will be involved. Every day choices or decisions are made from experiences taught or from experiences learned. The only choices people want to be responsible for are the decisions considered honorable or right. People also make bad decisions but do not want to be accountable for them. In life the choices made will guide the way people live whether responsible or irresponsible. Only be responsible for he/she decisions. As noted by Ron Haskins (2009), “Personal responsibility is the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards. But personal responsibility also means that when individuals fail to meet expected standards, they do not look around for some factor outside themselves to blame.”…

In School if one is not responsible they would not get any work done, and would not get a degree. Getting a degree is very important to most people. Without that education, a person would not be able to advance to the next step in their career. Not many colleges help teach personal responsibility. According to one study, Cal State Northridge is one of only 23 colleges and universities across the country chosen to be part of AACU 's Core Commitments three-year initiative to revitalize the role of higher education in fostering the development of personal and social responsibility among college students. Participation in the AACU national survey is a key component of this initiative. Cal State is “committed to increasing its curricular and co-curricular programs to provide additional opportunities to integrate social awareness, personal accountability and academic honesty."…

On behalf of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), researchers at the University of Michigan’s Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education surveyed 23,000 undergraduate students and 9,000 campus professionals (faculty, academic administrators, and student affairs staff) at 23 institutions participating in the Templeton Foundation-supported initiative, Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility. Data from the initial administration of the Personal and Social Responsibility Institutional Inventory (PSRII) in fall 2007 assessed the campus environment along five dimensions of personal and social responsibility: (1) striving for excellence; (2) cultivating personal and academic integrity; (3) contributing to a larger community; (4) taking seriously the perspectives of others; and (5) developing competence in ethical and moral reasoning.…

Personal responsibility means being accountable for your own actions. People who are not personally responsible people tend to blame others for their own mistakes. Let us be real for a moment, we all have blamed others for something we have done wrong. That doesn’t make us not a personally responsible person. It means we are human. I am talking about the person who blames other people or makes excuses all the time. For example let’s take academics for instants. A student can blame the teacher or instructor for failing on an exam. However, a student who has personal responsibility will not blame the teacher but will look closely at why the failure happened. Did the student understand something incorrectly? Did the student not study the material enough? Another example, is a person without personal responsibility are influenced by others. Such as, if a student does not turn their homework in on time, they might say: Well, Johnny said it was not due until Friday”. Instead of double checking when the assignment was due, they passed the blame to another student.…
