Personal Responsibility
Studies present the validation of a self-report scale capturing "academic entitlement," which is defined as the tendency to possess an expectation of academic success without a sense of personal responsibility for achieving that success (Chowning, 2009). Responsibility is a phrase that has lost moral value in society. Personal responsibility was once an idea that gave an individual a sense of purpose for the task at hand. Gave the youth of the world the feeling of independence from their over nurturing parents, and the freedom of making self-sacrificing decisions as a college student away from home. Personal responsibility is a lost art that needs to be readdressed to the youth. Taking responsibility for the actions developed on the individual level is the way to creating a better environment for students to thrive in college and beyond in life.
My Definition The definition of personal responsibility is, the state or fact of being responsible, answerable, or accountable for something within one’s power, control, or management (Collins English Dictionary). I believe that the more open a person is to taking responsibility for their actions the more they become trustworthy. Too many people depend on one another to just ignore the idea of taking responsibility for the actions they made. Personal responsibility has a great meaning to myself. My personal definition for personal responsibility includes everyday task of waking up on time to get ready for work to making sure that all of my classwork is completed, organized and properly done. Personal responsibility doesn’t just stretch out for a few moments and doesn’t only involve myself, it encompasses my whole life. I have been planning my wedding for next summer and constantly need to make sure that my fiancé and I are on the same page with ordering food and entertainment for the big day. Every single idea,

Personal responsibility is to have respect for themself and others around us. Responsibilities are where we take care of what needs done. Either in our personal lives, work, and in school. We as adults are responsible to take care of what needs done for each task that we take on for that day. If we are not responsible for what we do, we will not get what needs accomplished for that day. Responsible also means that we take account for our actions, no matter how big or how small the problem may be, and facing the consequences, results, and the outcome that your actions create. When people hear the word “responsibility,” they do not truly realize that it is easier than they think, and it comes naturally. “The power behind taking responsibility for your actions lies in putting an end to negative thought patterns. You no longer dwell on what went wrong or focus on whom you are going to blame. You don't waste time building roadblocks to your success. Instead, you are set free and can now focus on succeeding.” ― Lorii Myers…

What does personal responsibility mean? To me personal responsibility means that I am responsible for what I choose in life. I have to hold myself accountable and cannot blame others for the choices I make. Jake Lawson wrote on the Livestrong.com website, “Accepting personal responsibility includes but is not limited to: acknowledging that you are solely responsible for the choices in your life and accepting that you are responsible for what you choose to feel or think” (Lawson, 2011). That statement is very profound and powerful. It is easy to place the blame on others but all that really does is hold us back from finding our true potential. We cannot use scapegoats to hide the fact that we possibly make bad decisions in life. Whichever direction my life heads, I am the captain of this ship and I cannot let others control what I do. I have control over my emotional responses to outside interference and must live with the consequences of my actions. In the Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 89 (Issue 4), 497-515, Dana Klein wrote ‘people are responsible when they act with the ability to do the right thing for the right reasons, or a good thing for good reasons.’(Klein, pg. 497) What exactly does that mean? It means that if we choose not to do the right thing or make bad decisions, they have not shown personal responsibility. I have to be willing to improve myself professionally, academically and personally in life. I can never be complacent or else I will never accomplish more and…

In life, we cannot rely on other people to do things for us. In my own words, being responsible is the same as being honest with oneself and possessing the honor and integrity to own up to all your decisions and accepting each consequence if one decides whether or not to follow through. Eleanor Roosevelt was quoted for saying; “In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die.
