Personal Narrative: Why I Believe In Nursing
“Why I Believe in Nursing” I believe in nursing because of the care and compassion that is involved in being a nurse. Nursing is a profession that only certain people can be good at, it takes a large amount of care, compassion, and understanding to take care of patients with medical problems. When a person is sick they are scared, worried, and upset because of what is happening to them and when you have a good nurse to help explain things to a person it helps out a great deal with the nerves of being ill. With me being a nurse means that I can give back to people what I have received when I was sick. When I was 16 years old I was diagnosed with a life threatening illness that almost killed me. I was in and out of hospitals for over a year

I chose nursing as my profession because of my mother and other factors. My mother was an influence because early this year she was in the hospital for two weeks and during that period I only saw the doctor thrice. The nurses where the ones doing everything, so I felt they were the ones who nursed her back to health. The other deciding factors were: variety of places for jobs whether in the public, private, or community setting; the opportunity to learn new things since no day is ever the same; the opportunity to work with other health professionals; nurses will always be needed; nursing offers specialty areas, and the opportunity to be a traveling nursing.…

My mom taught me to live by the Golden Rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have lived by this rule all my life. I have never had a problem getting along with others and treating them with respect until I started my nursing career as an LPN. I started working at the local hospital, working night shift. I really enjoyed going into work, helping the patients with their needs. I enjoyed visiting with them and finding out what would make their stay better. Then one day the supervising nurse in charge of the floor took me aside and told me to stop visiting with the patients. I was thinking to myself okay there has got to be a good reason behind this. She told me the patients need their sleep and they don’t need me to visit with them and keep them awake.…

This past spring and summer I spent my time while not in school volunteering at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. I am interested in pursuing a nursing major, so I was looking for any way I could get a feel for the life of a nurse, and ways that I could help out my community in the process. I was talking about my interest in nursing with a lady at my school one day, and she mentioned that her daughter had participated in this program at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and thoroughly enjoyed it. After looking into the program some, I immediately submitted an application to be able to join. I began volunteering there in March of 2015, and enjoyed every minute of it. While volunteering there, my role in the program was to bring patients and…
