Personal Narrative: What I Learned Before Attending College
Before entering college, I was terrified. I often thought that what I learned in high school was not enough for me to succeed at a university. I viewed my writing skills and just my general course knowledge, as inadequate. While this hindered me at first, after experiencing my first semester in college, I believe that I have grown tremendously, not just academically, but socially as well. Being at such a diverse school has made me a lot more comfortable and openminded about conversing or even befriending those with different beliefs than mine. Though I have made growth over this semester, there are still areas that I need to improve on. Throughout the first semester, I noticed that I still am not confident in my work and that I tend to float by, settling for mediocre grades. While my grades have made a great improvement from high school, I know that I can do a lot better and that I should be putting in more effort in my school work. After my first semester at UNCG, I have improved in a lot of areas, and in the ones, that I still struggle in, I am in the process of growing and improving in those areas, but overall, my first semester has allowed me to learn a lot, not just about myself, but about the community that I am living in as well. When thinking of the areas that I have grown in, I believe …show more content…
Being on my own for the first time in my life has really allowed me learn things about myself and see things from a different perspective. Experiencing my first semester, I have grown, like developing a sense of responsibility. I know that I still am not responsible as I should or could be, I am still proud of the growth that I have made and striving to grow in the areas that I am currently lacking. As a freshman, with only one semester under my belt, I know that I have plenty of time to grow and develop character, therefore, I am excited to see my growth after I have finished my undergraduate

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

I aim to develop the aspects of my personality that I find the most advantageous, such as my creativity, my compassion, my strength, and my determination. The honors college will become the catalyst in my journey towards self-confidence, independence, and the embracement of my own creativity within the field I…

My expectations upon arriving were very high. I was expecting to meet many new people from different parts of the world from many different cultures. The thought of expanding my knowledge with new material had me very excited as well. Handling the workload was going to rely solely on me, and me alone. I knew there wasn’t going to be anyone to blame but me for my own failure. I expected there to be more challenging material introduced to me. My expectations for campus life were way different than what they actually were. I expected it to be like I’ve seen in movies which were undeniably entertaining. I was one of the students that thought that college was going to be a big party. My professors’ expectations of me were going to be drastically different. In high school you were in trouble for not attending class. Written up, and in some circumstances suspended. Your professor does expect you to come to class, but it’s not demanded. There will be no write up’s or suspensions. You are penalized by robbing yourself of the education you are paying for. Your professor won’t ask where your work is; only make you aware that you are failing. Some are nice enough to inquire into what the problem may be. However, again, the work load falls entirely on you. From my experiences I learned that college isn't all about being successful socially, rather, it is about being successful academically. It made me realize that your freshman year of college will…

Attending college has been a life changing experience for me this year. As every freshman in college usually come across with problems such as academics, housing, and life on campus There are also unforeseen situations that will come in our way as time goes on. Back then when I was in high school, hearing about college and living the college life was something I could not wait to experience. Some of my friends who made it to college will always tell me things which sometimes intimidate me about attending college but I said to myself, I can also make it regardless of how hard it is. Applying for colleges and meeting all the requirements each school demand was another stressful thing I went through but at end, I gained admission to North Carolina Central University where I am currently majoring in Nursing. As a freshman in North Carolina Central University, there were a lot of struggles I went through and still dealing with some of them. My first week in college as a freshman was very tough because I could not get a dorm on campus due to late application form submission. I was told a day before the move in date and I did not have any clue of where to stay for the semester. This situation made my parents very upset about the whole housing issues. I was told to stay home for the first semester if I did not get any place to stay but I said to myself I wasn’t going to stay home and waste the whole fall semester. I decided to go look for an apartment close to campus which will be affordable for me to stay in and go to school. It was very stressful finding somewhere close to campus to stay at that moment but God being so good I did find a place which was 10 minute away with access to campus shuttle. Whenever I thought about being away from home, it brings me tears and then again its making me stronger, independent and very active. I was homesick for only three days which wasn’t bad at all when it comes to my situation. The week that…

Once I am out of the house, living on my own and experiencing new thing; I know that I will have to make some changes to my daily life if I was to juggle the tasks presented. I know I will have to improve my time management and organizational skills but I believe those things will be very doable. Since my freshmen year, I know I have changed in many different ways. I am able to handle a greater work load, defiantly less shy, and have a better idea of what’s on in both the school and around the world. Now comparing my junior year self to my senior year self, I see few yet significate changes. Last year, I was focused but at a different level that I am this year. A majority of my focus senior year has been spent trying to get into colleges, complete scholarships, and try not to completely stress out! Last year, my focus was more on my schoolwork and less on my life outside of high school. Although, senior year I still have been focused on schoolwork a majority of it has been on my online college…

Starting college was a “wakeup call” for me. Two weeks after my high school graduation, I started an algebra support class and failed it, so now I’m taking it over. Failing the class made me realize I’m in college now and had to get rid of this high school mentality. I realized that it was up to me not to just do the homework, but to actually go back over it. It’s up to me to pay attention and ask questions. I realized nobody was really going to help me pass the class. It all falls back on me, to whether or not it’s going to happen. Sometimes you have to succeed.…

I have really high expectations for myself and what I am capable of this fall at Mount Olive College. I have very high goals for myself and have revised what I believe to be a well guided plan to achieve them. I feel eager and excited to unleash my mind, thoughts and the power of my determination. I know that it’s going to be a lot of hard work and its going to take a lot of time. Also, with that comes the bittersweet of sacrifice, of parts of my life that I am going to have to change in order to succeed. But my grandfather has always told me “anything worth having is worth working hard for.” I am my biggest critic and supporter all in one. I know that the only person that can stop me from doing what I came to do is me. No one else has the power to stand in my way and I refuse to let anyone stand in my way or hold me back! I’m ready to get into the whole swing and flow of college life and what it has to offer me. I have to admit that I am a little nervous about keeping my work load and my school load both equally balanced but it’s a challenge I am willing to face head on.…
