Personal Narrative: The Master Cleanse
Master Cleanse—My Experience
Few months ago, I got caught up in an unhealthy lifestyle brought about by too much work. As a result, I gained weight. I set the panic button at 165 pounds--that is when my weight leaves the healthy BMI recommendation for my height—and weeks ago, the scale wailed its alarm. I went back to exercising but fell short on tackling my bad eating habits. That was when I decided to do a detox, reset my diet and go back to a healthy routine. Last year, I did Dr. Oz’s 3-Day Detox Cleanse. This time, I opted to try something else—The Master Cleanse.
I first heard of the Lemonade Diet (more known as the Master Cleanse) probably eight years ago when a former boss of mine tried it for three days. Though called Lemonade Diet,

Weight down to 161.6 lbs. I know, right? They say the first three days are the hardest, but I was surprised with the energy I had. I even managed to get out and did some errands. I took a nap in the afternoon and woke up with dull headaches. Put together empty stomach and caffeine withdrawal and voila! welcome headaches. It slowly went away after I sipped another glass of lemonade. I finished Day 2 with remarkably no cravings nor feeling hungry.
Day 3: I gulped on the sea salt water drink first thing in the morning. One liter of salty water was too much for an empty stomach, I immediately felt bloated, as if I was going to vomit. Luckily, I didn’t. I have done the sea salt water flush before so I knew what was going to happen next—horribly gross. I will be doing laxative tea and sea salt flushing alternately in the next seven days. Weight at 160.3 lbs. I lost almost 5 pounds in three days.
I went to work anxious about how I would survive the day with an empty stomach. At the end of the day, my worries were all a waste of time as I finished the day at work full of energy. Afterwards, I did a light 25-minute exercise which I completed with no

I had been overweight since my early teens, as time passed it continued to worsen. at the age of 15 I was on the brink of obesity; I had to decide a change in my life. My life had consisted of school and video games; these combined had led me to an unhealthy lifestyle. I had dedicated years into my video game hobby, but this was the least active of my time. My hobby had to go, a new hobby had emerged: bodybuilding. Bodybuilding had given me a satisfaction that my previous hobby did not give, the satisfaction of working; that patience and efforts lead to greater satisfaction than momentary things like video…

The three-day diet analysis was interesting. There were many positive attributes to it and definitely negative ones. Over the course of the three days, which were Friday, Saturday and Sunday: and figured this would give a good depiction of what I was consuming on a regular basis. In some places I was consuming more than I should be and in some I was consuming less than I should be. There were also those places were I was getting just the right amount. It is so interesting to me to be able to find out what I am consuming and how I am consuming it. Being an active male, it was most interesting of what I ate, what my average of the three days were, and the plan on how I would correct the way I eat to make it a more healthier lifestyle.…

At the beginning of this course I was not eating like I was supposed to. I had irregular eating habits that were some-what healthy. Eating three times a day is normal; however, I was lucky to eat one time a day. Skipping the most important meal of the day, which was breakfast, was not benefiting me in any way. I was not consuming enough fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein, and grains. Since the beginning of this course I have already initiated my four nutritional and physical exercise goals by cutting out my fried food intake, reducing my starch intake, decreasing my soda intake, and exercising more.…

    Behavior Change

Keeping up a behavior can be hard, “the motivation must come from within.” For the past 23 days I have been striving to change and succeed, by the 22nd of October, in two specific nutritional behavior goals. One of them was to intake at least 30 grams of fiber on weekdays and at least 25 grams on weekends. The other was to reduce my sodium intake by a quarter, on weekdays, of what it was per day and reduce it by an eighth on weekends. This preparation all started about a week before my 23 days of transformation. In the three beginning days I tracked my diet and found that my low fiber and high sodium consumptions were eye-opening problems. My average fiber intake per day rested at 21.18g, which was significantly lower than my goal of 38g per day. As this issue arose so did my awareness that multiple aspects of my health were at risk. For example, my low fiber intake could place me in danger of developing heart disease. Fiber nutrients reduce the chance of disease like heart disease, diabetes, and many other frightful illnesses. In addition, foods that consist of fiber provide a feeling of fullness without additional calories being added to a diet. As for my Sodium intake, I was recommended a target of 1500mg a day but I was actually devouring a skyrocketing 3959.4mg a day. Without thinking twice I knew I had to make significant behavior changes. Concerning my towering sodium intake, I found that high sodium consumption makes the body preserve more water, which can raise the blood volume and, in turn, increase blood pressure. Considering my high blood pressure it would be essential and crucial to lower my sodium intake. Fortunately, the data collected demonstrated that the amount of sodium I have been taking in each day has been playing a role in my elevated blood pressure. After reviewing this data and conducting research on these two nutrients I felt very serious about changing my dieting…

My results from my 3 day recall shocked me slightly, because I didn’t realize how little I ate, but how unhealthy many of my food choices were. I wasn’t in range with my calorie intake for the 3 days. My calorie intake was over 1500, and my recommended calorie intake was a little over 1200. The foods I ate that consisted of the most calories were foods from fast food restaurants, mainly being McDonalds, and foods that were full of carbs. I generally eat a lot of fast food during the week because my schedule is so hectic and nonstop, I don’t have time to indulge in anything else. My calorie intake was higher on Sunday and Tuesday than it was on Monday. My overall calorie intake on Monday was 100.1, Tuesday it was 2312.7 and on Sunday 1258.7. I was a little surprised to see that my calorie intake on Monday was lower than on Sunday, but after reviewing the foods I consumed, it made sense. Out of the 3 days, Monday was the day I consumed the most vegetables, green tea, and water. I typically drink a lot of water and green tea every day, so that wasn’t a surprise, but according to my diet analysis my vegetable…
