Personal Narrative-The Jantzen Beach Car
It was about 1950. Larry Meyers and I had just watched Joey Chitwood’s Thrill Show. Chitwood drove a car on two wheels with the right side in the air. We had never seen that kind of driving before. Didn’t know a car could do all that. He jumped a few cars, and rolled a few cars, too. This was at the Jantzen Beach track a ¼ mile asphalt track. We came away excited and confident that we could drive like that. We went out and bought a 1920 Chrysler sedan. It had flower vases hanging inside of the back doors. It was tired and worn out, a sad old car. We bought it for $15 from some guy in our neighborhood. We never even bothered to ask if it could run. It needed work but could get up to 40 mph. That was good enough for us. We immediately

I woke up feeling so excited. Once we got everything we needed, we were out the door and into the car. We left real quick so we could find a parking spot.I couldn’t wait to get there and ride the roller coasters, Mr. Freeze, The Boss, etc., but the one ride that I really wanted to go on was The Batman. The ride looked so awesome. I heard that you go upside down during the ride.…

Screams pierced through the salty, humid, California air. Intimidating rides towered above me, even the thought of riding them terrifying me. Thundering waves crashed as a backdrop for the “Belmont Park” sign that about touched the clouds. Excitement and anticipation coursed through my veins. My palms turned clammy and we made our way through the never ending line to get our tickets. Wafting through the light breeze was the sweet aroma of funnel cakes, cotton candy, and hotdogs. Looking around me I knew one thing, I was determined to go on the three most daunting rides, the Giant Dipper, a hair-raising roller coaster, the Beach Blaster, sickening my stomach at the thought of it and lastly the dark looming room of extreme laser tag.…

My choice has got me bruised, fractured and, or almost clean breaks. My choice is bull riding. When I was 10 I started to ride. My first ride I hung on and got 2nd place. I thought it was so fun and easy that I would try it with no gear because I got beginner's luck. So the next rodeo was my keiki rodeo and I thought I could ride it.... 3 seconds went by and I got stepped on my hand and back. I had been checked out by the ambulance and ice packed. I thought just because it happened one time it wouldn't happen again. So I tried riding with only chaps so my legs would get as sore. So my next keiki rodeo I hung on for 6 second, which means I made my time, but just as I heard the buzzer ring with a loud "brapppphhh" I flopped over onto my back…

As I stepped into the mud colored cattle car, just the sight of it had made me wince. As I entered, it was like the other passengers were staring at me with shame, since if you were in the cattle car you had to of done something bad. I quickly put my head down. I could just feel the sticky wretched smell of feces and body odor in the car. My mother and I put our suitcases on the shelves, heaving them with all our strength to the very top shelf. We waited hours for in the dark, crammed, and smelly car before we started moving.…

My first car was a bit of a roller coaster, I had just learned to drive the year before and now it was time for me to have my own car. I would say the excitement I felt was overwhelming but even that might understate it just a little. The search began on a Sunday morning we went to several different dealerships, in search of the right mix of economy and style. Well, to be honest my mom was mostly interested in the economy part. The first dealership we went the car salesman seemed like the kind of over eager vacuum salesman you see on those old TV shows. The guy was just ridiculous, with his hair slicked back, and his slacks which were so tight he could start a fire. Every time he would show us a car I thought he was going to start a fire.…
