We were cruising down the road, a bit over the speed limit, when my friend, Janet, suddenly shouted nervously that we were passing through an under-resourced part of town. The Jeep rolled to a halt at the stoplight and a homeless woman stood by the curb, holding a cardboard sign with “Homeless, anything helps” scratched into it. I remember in fourth grade, she convinced me that money donated to the homeless was used to purchase drugs and that they acted with violent intentions. The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…

On our way back home from practice, we decided we did not want to return home just yet, so we headed out of town. Chelsea turned on to an S-curve gravel road, and I told her to stop the vehicle to switch me places so I could drive. I wanted to show her how I could drift the car through the corners of the road.…

Soon his truck was loaded up and we were tieing everything on it down with brightly colored bungie cords of varying sizes. Using the step on the side of his truck I pulled myself in and buckled the seatbelt. We watched as the other cars I had loaded up earlier pulled out and after starting up the car we slowly followed them. Now I had to laugh at the idea of taking the long way, I wanted to get there fast so I asked to take the freeway. We called everyone and after some worried complaints they all agreed and we turned at the next freeway entrance and were on our merry way. Soon however I learned how much of an awful mistake I made. Watching the mattress in front of us fly out of my aunts pearl white dodge ram was the funniest thing id ever seen in my life, well for about the next 3 seconds. Then we proceeded to run it over, now if I was that mattress id of…

This lively feeling was short lived as my most ‘memorable moment’ happened during our journey back home. The bus was filled with cultural music and we were all eating away at the traditional American cheese burgers with fries. This peaceful and friendly atmosphere was soon disturbed by a large burst and tilting movement of the coach. We all looked on ahead with our stuffed mouths waiting upon the news of what was going on. We were informed that the tyres had burst and, in no other than one of the busiest places in the world. New York City.…

I am impressed by Sr. Kathleen’s wisdom and kindness. I was so amazed that the kindness of one person could change the lives of hundreds of other people and even the society, because evidence had shown that decreasing the number of homeless people will help decrease the criminal rate. It was like something out of a book. Out of everything in the world, she had asked for a picture, something so precious that the woman carries it with her everywhere. It was then that I realized how volunteering and helping others can impact the person I help. It might be something insignificant, but it CAN make a difference. The people I help will cherish that moment and appreciate the act.…
