Personal Narrative: The Game Week
As the season opener draws closer, the West Virginia University football team is using this week to prepare as if it is game week.
"We will put them through exactly what they are going to do through a game week," head coach Dana Holgorsen said. "No different than what we have done the previous three or four years. Sunday, they came in, we watched the scrimmage, we lifted weights and then let them go. Monday was their off day. That’s their school day. Today we will start preparing for Missouri... We will start preparing, we will break up scout teams. "We will introduce our opponent and teach our kids how to practice on Tuesday, how to practice on Wednesday, what the routine is going to be like Thursday, travel Friday, come in on Saturday and …show more content…
"(Redshirt junior offensive lineman) Marcell (Lazard) will get the nod and will start, but (redshirt freshman offensive lineman) Colton (McKivitz) is going to play. Colton is probably going to end up playing both left tackle and right tackle. When do we put Colton in the game? That depends on how Marcell plays. There are situations that effect that. The battle at corner is ongoing. We have four seniors in, (redshirt senior cornerback) Antonio (Crawford), (redshirt senior cornerback) Nana (Kyeremeh), (redshirt senior cornerback) Maurice (Fleming), and (redshirt senior cornerback) Rasul (Douglas), that have all done good things and they will keep plugging away." With the loss of junior safety Dravon Askew-Henry, the Mountaineers' defense took a tough loss but senior Jeremy Tyler is working hard to fill the void. "Jeremy looks good there," Holgorsen said. He’s played it, he has experience. I’ve been very proud of Jeremy. Where I thought that (redshirt senior safety) Jarrod Harper stepped in for Karl (Joseph) last year and did a solid job, I see Jeremy stepping in for Dravon and doing a solid job, not only from a performance point of view but from a leadership point of view as well.     It was Thursday at 3:00 pm everyone arrived to the locker room door hyped about the game. Our locker room was locked so everyone was waiting for coach to open the door. We were all getting frustrated over the wait on coach because we were all excited to play our first game of the season. Also for some of us it was our first actual football game. Backyard football comes nowhere close to actual football, in practice we all realized it pretty quick but we also caught on pretty fast too. Overall we were a pretty good team and worked together well. While we were waiting we started to fall apart little from all the frustration that coach seemed like he wasn’t going to arrive. Just when we were all about to walk back to our parents car. Coach arrived rushing through with keys in his hand ready open the door as soon as he could. He was a cheetah down the halls he got to the door in seconds. Once the door was open we bursted in like a cattle of bulls, it sounded like a stamped down the hallway on our way to our lockers! Everyone got ready in seconds because the game was getting ready to start and the other team was outside waiting for us, once everyone was changed we jogged outside in a single file line to make us look organized. Once we got out there it looked like if the other team had half their school on the football team! They had at least 130 players, which is almost triple our team. We started off pretty good and were holding the score at 0-0 but later on in the game our team was getting pretty tired but the opposing team were still energized. They had so many players I didn’t see the same player more than 9 times! So we tried holding them off but there were some plays were they would use their advantage of having the energy to have the half back run through or they would have their receivers run far at a fast pace to catch the ball before we even get close to the receivers.     As the sun rises to its highest peak of the day, the local high school team starts heading to the dry dirt filled football field. As the athletes make their way to the field the dust rises and the smell of the soil hits their nose. The athletes continuing their daily ritual, get into their usual formations and start their warm ups. The head coach, Shane Cox, walks around and initiates small talk with the players. Shane Cox inherited the head position at Fairfax High School in 1999. He turned around a football program that hasn’t won a single football game in two years; Shane Cox has won two Los Angeles Division II City Championships in the past decade. Serving for more than 13 years, Coach Cox has contributed a lot of his time and effort into this program at Fairfax High School. A high school coach has to work additional hours during the sports season. This can result in a work week over 40 hours. Working nights, holidays, evenings and weekends are common for high school coaches. A high school coach has to be prepared to work in bad weather and be willing to travel with the team to different locations for games. They also run the risk of injury due to being on the sidelines during sports games.
