Personal Narrative: The Change In My Reading Habits
Through the four years in high school, I have experienced a drastic transformation in my reading habits. I moved from a person who read only if he had to, to a person that does read because he appreciates it. Within these times my reading practices have significantly changed. I like to be alone; I don’t like to be surrounded by any one when I read. I prefer somewhere nice and quiet, usually my room to do my usual reading. I usually put on music whenever I do the reading. People would say that reading with music on could be disturbing but for me I feel that it makes me loosen up and focus more on the task at hand. I also take time when I read. I like to take a break between chapters, after I finish one or two, then restart again. Doing this could help a lot, because during the break, I reflect on what I just read and wonder about the author’s message. …show more content…
The best time of the day for me to read is usually right before I go to bed or sometime earlier in the evening. I am not a morning person, and I don’t have a lot of energy to do any type of work in the early hours. My reading preferences are wide-ranging; I enjoy to read almost everything from magazines to history books. And out of all the books I have read, I have come to love non-fiction. I have many favorite books; one of them I read in my senior year of high school, The Great Gatsby. It is a classic book that I recommend for anyone to read. I love to read mostly anything except for sci-fi novels. I feel that those stories are too unbelievable and they do not follow a

Books are precious pieces that improve one’s knowledge and help define one’s personality by relating themselves to characters within the text. As Vladimir Nabokov said in Good Readers and Good Writers “The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.”(Nabokov, 973) I always believed that by reading a book you become one with yourself by somehow feeling all the problems of the characters and become completely absorbed in their world, therefore feeling like you have a purpose as you read.…

Reading is my life. It’s my escape from the world around me. I love getting lost in a story about monsters and myths, or a Cinderella gone wrong. If I didn’t draw as much as I did, I’d probably be the anti-social bookworm in the back, like in all those cliche teenage love stories. It’s actually quite surprising to see how many people dislike books, there’s nothing wrong with a little reading every once and awhile. But who am I to judge? I wasn’t a very big reader myself until maybe two years ago. Of course, that leads to the first reason why I enjoy reading so much.…

I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.…

The amount I have changed as a writer is unbelievable. The biggest change is that I no longer loathe writing a paper. I feel as though it comes more naturally than before, and I can now make complete sentences easier than ever before. Another thing that has changed is how quickly I can write a paragraph before I would struggle getting a cohesive thought on a page, but now writing a paragraph that relates all together in some way is easier. All of this brings me onto my next point.…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

I remember, when I was younger, that I wasn't fond with the idea of writing. I remember after writing out paragraphs upon paragraphs my hands always hurting and my brain exhausted from all the mental thinking and processing of writing. However, I would have this feeling; this sensation when I would write with thought, with passion and I carved it. However, it was hard to find a place that was felt the same kind of passion that I felt for writing and could help hone my writing. Then, I found out about BISFA that could help me with my writing, but my English teacher, who was supportive in my decision, told me a question all writers should always themselves, Why do you write? I figured that I would have an answer, but it I didn't. However, it…

My experience with Accelerated Reader (AR) is not long, but I started doing ARs when I got to Leilehua in my freshman year. At first, it was difficult for me because I did not understand much English; therefore, when I took my first STAR test, I got a low reading level and I felt disappointed and dumb. The first time I took an AR I failed with a 60%, I was afraid that I would not meet my deadline and it would affect my grade. But somehow Leilehua’s AR system got me into reading culture. With the time I started to improve, getting a higher score, and reading level. Although it sometimes forces me to choose books I do not enjoy reading and puts pressure on me that it could affect my grade. However, AR system motivated me to read, but it is not preparing me for the future. AR should help students be prepared for the after high school life, but it is not completely doing its job. Leilehua should modify AR in order to prepare students to transition to the hallway of life and adulthood.…

Throughout the year, my writing has had significant improvements, compared to where I began. First, I began this semester fairly confident in my writing abilities. I thought that I had a strong grasp on writing concepts that include: transition words, literary devices, proper grammar techniques, correct paper writing format. In contrast, I felt that I began the year with a weak vocabulary, which has always been one of my weaker areas, If I were to rank myself on day one of class, without knowing all of the material we were going to cover, I would rank my writing skills an eight out of ten.…

I remember that I have always been drawn to classical novels. Some of the novels I had read are still my constant companions that help to understand the difficult questions and solve the most important problems. Historical novels help to look at the present from a broader perspective and understand it in better way. In my family, I have constantly been confronted with the scientific literature. Science fiction opens a window into a new unknown and tempting world. Such books liberalize and elevate my mind, as well as develop my thinking skills and enrich…
