Personal Narrative: Sliding Down The Slopes
Sliding Down The Slopes
Skiing is one big, sharing hobby that everyone in our family enjoys… even my mom can do it! It’s such a fun bonding time, and we always go over Christmas break. We usually go to Minnesota, but this time we went to Galena, Illinois to Chestnut Mountain Resort!
The first hill I went down was a green. The easiest one there. I was nervous, since I always forget how to ski every time we go, and I had lots of pressure on me not to get hurt. I went down it knowing it was easy. I suddenly forgot how to stop, then needed to stop because a big rocky cliff was coming at me fast. I ended up falling, and my brother was laughing, because I just went straight down. My brother showed me how to stop, and I never fell down again on that three day trip. My family members on the other hand, took many other falls, but I’ll get to that later.

I used to go down everything, but now I was scared I would be out of sports. My sister just got a snowboard; she went at a slow pace. It was either staying with her the whole time and going on easy hills, or going with my brothers, who shook hands to go on every hill, even the difficult ones. I didn’t want to go on hard or easy hills, I wanted to go my own pace. The first day I kept it easy, but the next day Sophia switched to skis so she could go with us. My brothers convinced her to go down a black diamond, which didn’t turn out well. She ended up taking off her skis and slid down her bottom the whole way! So we just went down blues together while the boys went down life threatening hills, well what I thought were life

I remember day after day going to swimming lessons in the summer of 2002 at the Mount Vernon pool. Almost every day I walked by the ladder that seemed to go on forever. I used to sit on the pools edge and watch the older kids do flips and other cool tricks off of the high dive. Many times I had gotten half way up the ladder but couldn't bring myself to go all the way up. For a seven year old going off the high dive was like a right of passage and a way to be seen as "cool" in the eyes of the older kids. Today I will be telling you about the first time a braved the high dive.…

I had to mentally prepare myself many times because it was a challenge enough to find the way down the mountain without torrential winds. I struggled on and on and the wind slowly let off as I got closer to base until at last, the final descent. I could see the line leading those poor unknowing skiers onto The Peruvian Express. I laughed as I came down near them and made sure that I at least warned a few of them about what was in store for…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

That experience was like drugs and I wanted more, before this trip ended, my parents brought my two sisters and I to another skiing resort, Badger pass. My confidence had been built because of the easy runs in Squaw Valley, so I made my way to a slightly steeper slope. Using the same method as before and allowing gravity to pull me, I closed my eyes to enjoy the gentle breeze. Suddenly, I found myself tumbling over and over in a clashing of skis,…

This was my first time and I was extremely nervous to go to the top because I am scarcely afraid of heights. I recall walking to the top and saying to my friends, ‘I do not think I can do this. It goes too high.’ They just kept telling me, ‘Just try it once. I promise it will be fun.’ So what we decided to do was start lower and go to the halfway point. This is where many of the younger children went with their parents. So a few of my friends and I went to the half way point and all got in the water and on the inner tubes. We were all holding hands staying connected as we floated down the stream. The ride down the half jump was sufficient. Through the clear water, I could see the sharp, jagged rocks sitting there just waiting to jump into someone’s leg. But on the lower level of the stream, the water was calm and just barely kept the rafts moving. So then after we got to the bottom of the torrent, my friends talked me into trying the big drop. I was terrified to complete this task, but with my friends, I knew I could accomplish anything. So we walked to the top of the creek and rode down the drop individually. Before the four foot drop, I almost flipped my raft, but I had the balance to keep myself from flipping. Then, once we all hit the drop, I was the only one who flipped. My knee did hit a rock but I did not feel it until later on towards the end of the stream. However, I did not cut my knee open, it just scraped a tad and bruised and knotted…
