Personal Narrative: Section Leader
I wake up with a different feeling in my stomach knowing that its game day. Now I'm not talking about college game day, or even NFL Sundays. I’m talking about U of D Jesuit High School game day. Whether it is basketball, football, hockey, soccer, or lacrosse, all I can think about, from the moment I wake up, is leading the best student section in the state later that day. Ever since I was a 7th grader, I had always dreamed of being a section leader. When my dream finally came true senior year, I was ecstatic. Being a section leader was a key ingredient for what was going to be an amazing senior year. I love being a section leader because every time I’m out there, I know that there is a 7th grader, at the top row of the section, waiting

When I moved from the eastside to the westside of Dearborn in 2006, I felt distraught. I barely knew anyone that went to Bryant Middle School. I wanted to return home and talk to my friends that went to Woodworth Middle School, in East Dearborn. To comfort me with a pet, my brothers took me along with them to the Dearborn Animal Shelter. We combed through several cages containing cats; we saw an adorable three-legged cat, a beautiful calico cat, and some cute white kittens. We then came upon a cage containing a small white and black cat named Ring Leader. Ring Leader was 5 months old at the time. He was lightly shedding, climbing over the shelter worker, and feverishly looking around. Ring Leader seemed like an energetic and fun cat, so I chose…

Ever since I was the Defensive Captain of the football team every little thing I did was noticed. With the coaches working in our school, we were constantly supervised and had certain privileges other students didn’t. Before every big game I wanted to relax and focus on the game ahead, but the entire school wanted to talk to you and ask questions about what you’re going to do. In a way I enjoyed this, the pressure to step up to the plate made me feel like I had a purpose for the school. I believed in myself and knew I was capable of meeting their expectations. Their satisfaction didn’t satisfy me in anyway but seeing my hard work and dedication pay off did. I cherished the moments when the announcer would scream my number on the field after a big play. These moments were immaculate in my eyes especially in front of the big crowds. One of the tragic incidents of my…

My time as a Younglife leader stands out to me as most rewarding. Knowing that the best things in life take time, I greatly cherish the relationships and transformations molded during that experience. Over the course of three years, with countless camps, soccer games, and conversations, I gained the privilege of speaking into the lives of my middle school students. Nothing was more fulfilling than the chance to offer words of reinforcement and guidance whenever they approached me seeking advice about their worries and struggles. My faith gives me an inherent joy, but the greater reward has been sharing that joy and source of strength with others. I now understand how being a friend who thoughtfully listens and encourages can sometimes be enough…

When I got my first job as a supplemental instruction leader last year, I was excited as much as I was terrified. Since coming to the US in 2012, I had never held a job, therefore I did not have any experience with the responsibility of being a paid employee. I had been in different leadership positions, but none came with the scrutiny of a job. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my experience working as an SI leader. The knowledge that my colleagues at work are also students, made it easier for me to seek help from them, when I needed guidance. The professional development days we had, taught me to open up more to others about challenges that I have faced, and continue to face on the job and otherwise. I learned to be flexible, to adapt to unforeseen…

An outstanding student leadership team needs to be able to motivate the group to realize its potential. The most effective way to motivate people to accomplish the goals of the leaders is to ensure the followers understand how the leader’s goals will help them. The whole group needs to share a common goal. Leaders need to effectively communicate what that goal is, why it is relevant to everyone in the group, and what each member has to do in order to achieve that goal. It is vital to have goals and keep track of them, breaking them up into short-term goals. As a leader, my goal will be to prompt the band to perform at the highest level possible, making superior music along the way. This will help each member become a better musician and become better at operating as part of a team. Besides the common, long-term goal, each member has their own personal goal of what they want to reach during the season. Another way leaders can motivate followers to help them achieve their goal is by helping the followers achieve their own personal goals. Despite tedious work and long hours,…
