Personal Narrative: Replacement Of The English Class
During my time at Conroe High, I have been nothing but content, and upon being asked about a rule to be removed or editing, I had to think in a larger scale. Although my peers would likely call for something menial, such as dress code regulations to be removed, what I would call for is a bit more extreme. I would request the complete reorganization and separation of the English department, and the subsequent removal or replacement of the English credit requirement to graduate, because, while advanced English classes are an enrichment of the mind and perspective, they, nor their more basic counterparts - which are little more than busy work, are a unique or essential part of a legitimate high school major. The English department is not useless …show more content…
Those foolish enough to desire to be journalists later in life take journalism classes. Natural artists take and love art classes, and yet many - if not most - writers, regardless of their talents, would refuse to take general English classes if they had the choice. Students would much rather gain their English credits elsewhere. For example, those wanting to have a high GPA or to pursue higher education, would likely take an Intro to Writing AP* class, which doesn’t actually exist, but definitely should, rather than English. Many would argue against the separation of the English department, calling it useless or saying it would put many teachers out of jobs. I beg to differ, in fact, my opinion on it is almost the complete opposite. Having more specialized classes would assist students in ways that better fit their major, and separated classes would likely mean that teachers would have less students in each class, which allows them to grow better bonds with their students. Not only this, but many English teachers would be freed from having to teach the same class agenda six times per day, which would likely improve the general well being of the teacher

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…

One of the most challenging things a person can experience is leaving everything you’ve ever known behind and starting completely over somewhere else. Eva does this in the Lost in Translation by moving from Poland all the way to Canada when she is just a teenager. When I was sixteen years old my family moved from Minnesota to Texas. This isn’t quite as drastic of a change as in Lost in Translation, but many of the things Eva experienced I can relate with even if I just crossed numerous state line borders. Eva says “My mother says I’m becoming “English.” This hurts me, because I know she means I’m becoming cold.” I’ve realized as I’ve lived in Texas for the last four years I’ve started to say stuff and do things I would have never done in Minnesota.…

My Socratic Seminar took place about a week ago on April 24. I always enjoy talking with my other English education majors because though we have lots of classes together we don’t often have many opportunities for open discussion between us. It was even better this time because we also had other language classes and journalism represented to add to our normal group of people. I was excited to see what knowledge they could bring to the table. Having read the questions beforehand, I was slightly nervous that we would actually find something to talk about. This class has been a slight struggle in just trying to differentiate between “teaching literacy,” which is something that all of the English students do all the time, and finding ways to “focus…

Filled with nervous excitement, my ten-year-old-self ran to the bulletin board eager to discover whether or not he was accepted to the choir. As he read the list of who were chosen, his heart sank; he was not on the list. “Maybe I should give up singing ” he thought; “Maybe my voice is not good enough”. However, he refused to despair; he was determined to achieve his goals despite this failure.…

I am the eldest of three to a school teacher and professional musician turned deli clerk. I grew up on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Like most of my classmates, I qualified for free or reduced lunch. It is difficult for families to find any house to rent year-round, never mind a safe one. I remember in one house we weren’t allowed to jump, or run for fear the floor collapsing. I had classmates who didn’t have enough to eat; one of my best friends in middle school was a foster child whose mother struggled with addiction. I was among the few who, though poor, was well cared for and loved by my happily married parents. I believe that in a “civilized” society no one should have to struggle for the most basic necessities. At first, I was not…

I have always had struggles and difficulties when it comes to writing. This is due to the fact that English is not my first language, and that I am still learning. I started to learn how to speak, and listen, and mainly write in English when I was in ninth grade. Writing has been the hardest to deal with it, because I have many spelling and mechanical errors and most importantly, how to organize an essay, but this changed when I took English 49 with Professor Lucero. In my first day of class, I was assigned to write an essay about my experience with writing. I was not completely sure on how to start my essay and how to organize it. When I was in High School, I did not write many essays, and the few I did, I have endless help. So, I just my…

Growing up I spent most of my childhood in Vietnam living an ordinary life. My parents were not risk-takers until they decided to quit their career as educators and move to the United States. I headed to my first class which just so happened to be my favorite subject, English. The hallways were very wide but when filled with students I felt like I had to shove my way through just to get to my locker. The lockers were a mixture between Gray and purple. The school colors were supposed to be purple and silver but there was no way that these lockers could be considered. I took a look at the little piece of paper that the lady in the office had given me and tried out the combination on my locker. It took me about five minutes to open it and after struggling for that long I was a little irritated so when it did open, it flew open and slammed into the locker next to mine. I held my breath and hoped that nobody had noticed. I took a long deep breath and slowly opened my eyes again. Luckily I was still standing alone and nobody around was looking at me. I put my extra books and notebooks into the locker and and closed it as quietly as I could.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

Long wide roads that seemed to go on endlessly, small houses reflecting the neighborhood, steel fences losing its touch for it was beginning to rust, tall palm trees swaying back and forth, and a black broken down Toyota parked near the pavement of a butterscotch house. Right around the corner is where you’d lay eyes on Thomas Jefferson Middle School. As I walk into unfamiliar building and know nothing about the culture and language a huge chill came over me, which I have never felt before. Something finally hit me I was in school in America. I walked in my first English class and sat there in a full panic mode but pretended I knew what I am doing. I heard a loud noise that said “Alright class take out your notebook and write a paragraph about your winter break”. Although I can understand some English words I had no idea how I was going to do…
